Press ReleaseFebruary 9, 2014
The 4-year-old bay mare Mi Angela, overlooked in the wagering at 7-1 even after an allowance-level win as a 6-5 favorite January 5, proved best by a head over 25-1 runner-up Wagons West in winning Sunday’s $27,000 Beautiful Prairie Stakes at Hialeah Park.
The winner, a Texas-bred daughter of Jet Black Patriot owned by Cesar Rosales, was saddled by trainer Rolando Almanza and ridden to victory by veteran jockey Shanley Jackson.
Mi Angela, who was bred by Michael Pohl, covered the race distance of 250 yards in a sharp time of :12.947, just .054 off the track record of :12.893 set by Madresita, the eighth-place finisher in the Beautiful Prairie.
“Mr. Rosales and I are thrilled; she ran really well,” said conditioner Almanza. “We knew she could compete with these horses and we expected her to run a big one today.
“It was a really good prep for her,” he added. “We’ve been shooting for the ($100,000-guaranteed Sam Abbey Memorial) invitational at the end of the meet (February 23) and we believe she’s earned a spot in the starting gate.”
Mi Angela notched her sixth career victory, and her third tally at Hialeah Park, in her 15th lifetime start. She garnered the winner’s share of $16,200 to drive her career earnings over the $100,000 mark at $113,581.
With a significant show wager on 3-1 second choice Tampico, who finished seventh, and 2-1 favorite Valiant Lil Lady settling for fifth, the results of the race produced interesting mutuel payoffs.

The official order of finish in the 2014 Beautiful Prairie was: Mi Angela, Wagons West, A Plain Brown Rapper, Straightfromtheheart, Valiant Lil Lady, BPS Jumpin Frisco, Tampico and Madresita.
Hialeah Park now moves into the penultimate week of the 2013-14 season with four days of live racing on the calendar over Valentine’s Day weekend. Racing resumes Friday, February 14, and continues through a special Monday afternoon card on Presidents’ Day, February 17.
