Midnight Cartel Takes Black Gold 330
Heavens Assured also scores stakes victory at Will Rogers Downs.

Will Rogers Downs on Saturday presented a pair of American Quarter Horse stakes highlighted by the $95,000 Black Gold 330 Futurity (RG3). The card also included the $37,740 Kansas Jackpot Futurity (R).
In the Black Gold, Carlos Lozano and Abelardo Flores Jr.’s Midnight Cartel repeated her winning effort in the trials and scored a neck victory in the rich final. With Jimmy Brooks up for trainer Eddie Willis, the Oklahoma-bred daughter of Carters Cartel dashed the 330-yard distance in :16.669 for a 96 speed index.
Bred by Henry Brown, Midnight Cartel improved her bankroll to $43,772 with a record of 5-2-1-0. The filly finished off the board in her first two career starts at Remington Park and then posted a second-place run against maidens at Fair Meadows before winning both of her starts at Will Rogers.
Valeriano Racing Stables LLC’s Make It Jess, a gelding by Make It Anywhere with three career wins, finished a game second. Azoom Diamond, a daughter of Azoom running for owner/trainer Luz Chavira, took third with favorite Spit Like Jagger in fourth.
In the Kansas Jackpot Futurity, favorite Heavens Assured drew clear to win the 350-yard sprint in :17.686 with Jesus Salazar aboard for trainer Gary Walker. Bred and owned by Darrell and Nancy Powell, Heavens Assured scored her third consecutive victory after finishing a close second in her career debut. The daughter of Streak And Dash has now banked $35,362.
Paul Newmaster’s homebred Im Shaky, a filly by Embrujo FG, took second with Heza Volcom, by Volcom, in third.
