Coming off a third place effort in the May 30th trials, Midori N Smoke bounced to a half-length win over Design Tobe A Winner in the $55,175 Lucille Rowe Derby at Arapahoe Park Saturday afternoon. Fastest qualifier Nifty Fury finished another half back in the show position.
Ridden by Tony Guymon, Midori N Smoke broke on top and held sway throughout as she completed the 350 yards in a rainstorm in :17.392, good for a 99 speed index. The $33,105 winner's purse boosted her career total to nearly $80,000.
Last seasons' Cherry Creek Futurity (RG3) winner races for owner/breeder Margo Schares and trainer John Hammes. The daughter of Special Leader, out of Smoke Corona by Corona Cartel, has compiled a 6-4-1-1 record.
Jason Giles conditions Design Tobe A Winner for owner James Lynn. The stakes-winning daughter of second crop sire Winners Version picked up $11,035 for the effort. Russell Vicchrilli had the riding assignment aboard the filly that he bred in Colorado from the Splash Bac mare Designers Splash.
Nifty Fury, who entered the race as the fastest qualifier for owner Margarito Montalvo, earned $5,518 for his third place effort. Chris Gandarilla saddled the Furyofthewind gelding out of Iza Flyin Eye, by Mr Eye Opener. Jose Montoya had the riding assignment.
Completing the official order of finish were Hardhitting Sawyer, Jesstastic, Ikanshazoom, Aladina, Luck N Fury Pinffulo and Lil Ms Money Bags.
