Mister Michael Wins Paul Ford

Colt earns first career stakes win in 550-yard event.

December 15, 2012

After battling with Shes Prime Time for the lead, Jose and Gustavo De La Torre’s Mister Michael took command in the final 110 yards to win the 550-yard $20,000 Paul Ford Handicap on Friday at Los Alamitos. Ridden by Gregorio Arriaga, the 3-year-old Snowbound (TB) colt ended up with a half-length victory over Shes Prime Time while covering the distance in :27.200 over a wet fast track.

Bred in California by Alessio, Brown and Davies LLC, Mister Michael scored his third win in nine starts. He came into this race after a very troubled sixth-place finish in a trial to the Grade 1 Southern California Derby on December 2. Mister Michael’s previous victory was an allowance decision in June 2011. Mister Michael earned $11,000 in the Paul Ford to take his career earnings to $$25,678. Shes Prime Time, saddled by Lin Melton for Abigail Kawananakoa, earned $4,500 for running second. Impassion Queen, Frequentflyer, Properly Snowbound and Berkley Gal completed the field.

The riding star of the night was Salvador Ibarra, who piloted his first two winners ever at Los Alamitos. Ibarra came into the night’s program winless from his first 15 mounts, but he had finished second twice and third four times. Ibarra’s first win came aboard EG High Desert Farms’ Czecks And Roses in the sixth race at 300 yards. His next victory was with Felix A. Gonzalez’s Steller in the eighth race also at 300 yards.
