Mitford Tops Picov Trials

Ajax Downs hosts Picov Maturity trials.

Stakes winner Mitford got his second win in as many starts this season as he defeated What Ta Wear to post the top qualifying time for the Picov Maturity Sunday afternoon at Ajax Downs. The 10 fastest qualifiers, from the two trial races contested, will return to the Ontario, Canada, racetrack on Sunday, June 29 and vie for the winner's share of a $50,000-added purse over 350 yards.

Ridden by Cassandra Jeschke, Mitford broke second but took the lead shortly as the post-time betting favorite. The Ivory James gelding held off What Ta Wear by a nose to get the top qualifying time of :17.510, for a 104 speed index. Scott Reid conditions the 4-year-old for owner John Wilson. It was the fifth win in 11 starts for the black gelding out of Fitting Celebration, by Ronas Ryon. Bred in Texas by Bobby D. Cox, Mitford has earned just over $55,000.

Multiple stakes-placed What Ta Wear held on for the second fastest time of :17.570, a 102 speed index. Owned-and-trained by Renee Wilson, the Game Patriot 4-year-old is from the Stoli mare Stoli Wear. Sandra Laszlo bred What Ta Wear in Ontario. She has earned $58,464 and was ridden by Daniel W. Rose.

Rose also rode MCM Tres Episode to a neck win in the second trial for owner-trainer Wilson to post the fifth fastest time of :17.760. The Tres Seis 4-year-old is a multiple stakes-placed earner of $63,869. McM Farm, LLC bred the bay miss in Texas from the First Down Dash mare Sheza First Episode.
