Who would win the first race for 2-year-olds of the season at Los Alamitos? That mystery was solved when Ed Allred’s Mystery Man scored a hard-fought victory over Rod and Anna MacPherson’s Jazzy Kid in the first baby race of the season at the Orange County oval on Sunday.
Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Flores, Mystery Man outfinished Jazzy Kid by a head while covering the 300 yards in :15.69. The two could meet again in the future, as they’re both eligible to compete in the trials to the Kindergarten Futurity (G2) on Sunday, May 4. Bred by Ed Allred, the TR Dasher gelding also represented the bloodlines of Raise A Secret, who passed away earlier in the week. One of the great broodmare sires of all-time, Raise A Secret sired Intriguer, who is the mother of Mystery Man. A two-time winner during her racing career, Intriguer’s mother is the great Oh La Proud, who produced champions Hawkinson, Hawkish and Flame N Flash.
Raise A Secret stood at Allred’s Rolling A Ranch and in his career he sired 432 winners, 43 stakes winners and the earners of nearly $11 million. He was the sire of champion Secret Card, Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1) winner Kingman Kid and major stakes winners Luva Secret, Brotherly, Twelvie, Dicey Secret, Templetonian, Girl Secrets, Sneaky Fast and more. Dicey Secret is the mother of 2006 All American Futurity (G1) winner No Secrets Here. Raise A Secret ranks 13th on the all-time broodmare sire list of earners.
