Mile High Futurity (G3) winner Fabulous Ocean meets Rocky Mountain Futurity winner Built Tuff Enough over 400 yards in the $30,000-est. Adequan Arapahoe Park Derby Challenge on Saturday afternoon at the track southeast of Denver.

Erasmo and Sandra Muniz’s Fabulous Ocean (Ocean Runaway-Fabulously Fast by Mr Jess Perry) ran his benchmark race last summer at Arapahoe Park when he won the Mile High Futurity by a scant head after finishing a close second in his trial. That was his only win from five 2012 outs, but he managed three second-place runs for trainer Hipolito Michel-Valverde.

After taking the winter off, Fabulous Ocean returned to racing in the two trials to the Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge and won the first trial by a neck with a :19.730 time to top the qualifier’s list.

Owned by Rudy Ramirez with Larry and Michelle Rice, Built Tuff Enough (Mighty Invictus-Inomuff (TB) by Stravinsky) also made his seasonal debut in the Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge trials and won the second trial by one-half length for trainer Ramirez. The colt turned in the third-fastest time of :19.772.

Built Tuff Enough made each of his four freshman starts at Arapahoe Park and won his first three outs, highlighted by his one-half-length win in the $109,000 Rocky Mountain Futurity in his third out.

Junior’s Quarter Horses Inc.’s Carters Playmate (Carters Cartel-A Streakin Mate by Streakin La Jolla) was second behind Fabulous Ocean, with the second-fastest time of :19.766. The Shae Cox-trained colt has a win and two second-place runs from three career starts, all at Arapahoe Park.
