September 22, 2013

Fastest qualifier and 3-2 favorite Ofashionsoutherngirl scored a decisive 1 ¼-length victory in Sunday’s $49,648 New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (RG3) at The Downs at Albuquerque. Breaking from post 10 under jockey Porfirio Cano, the daughter of Southern Corona sprinted 400 yards in :20.002 while racing into an 18 mph headwind. The sorrel filly runs for breeder/owner Rita Danley and trainer Fred Danley.

Ofashionsoutherngirl failed to find the winner’s circle in her first eight career starts but has now put together a three-race winning streak. The filly broke her maiden at Albuquerque on August 14 and then came back on September 8 to win her Breeders’ Derby trial by a length in a time of :19.613. She earned $8,174 in those first eight starts, and in her last three wins she has banked $33,284 for a career total of $41,458.

Rex Hill, winner of last year’s New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park, finished second with Alonso Rivera up for trainer Emilio Cadena III and owners Ross and David Hinkins. The Jesse James Jr colt has earned $166,114 in his career. Maiden Vuvu Zela, the longest shot in the field at odds of 23-1, took third for trainer and owner Kristopher Cordova.
