May 24, 2012
Jose Socorro Vera’s fastest qualifier Chickie Kool tops the $81,002 Old South Futurity, while Jess Fly With Me searches for his third-straight win in the $52,550 Old South Derby on Friday night at Delta Downs.
Chickie Kool (Country Chicks Man-First Kool Baby by First Down Dash) won her maiden in her third start when she won her Old South trial by a half length. She raced the 330 yards in :16.711 for the quickest time from seven trials. The Jonathan Casteneda-trained filly made her first start in the Sam Houston Futurity trials and posted a third-place effort to earn a spot in the Sam Houston Juvenile (R). She was eighth in the Juvenile.
Trainer Kenny Roberts has the second- and third-fastest qualifiers, Jet Black Legend (Game Patriot-First Down Hemp by First Down Jewel) and Shining Tellercartel (Teller Cartel-Classic Guitar by A Classic Dash).
Oscar Rohne’s Jet Black Legend won his latest two races after a third-place run in his career debut. He won his Old South trial by a half length in :16.746.
Mercy Hinklin’s homebred Shining Tellercartel was second behind Chickie Kool in her first start with a :16.785 time.
Antonio Carrizales’ Jess Fly With Me (Fly Jess Fly-The Meteorite by Meter Me Gone) is after his third-straight win in the Old South Derby, and if it wasn’t for being fractious and losing his jockey three starts ago, he could be going for his fifth straight win.
Two starts ago, the Eusevio Huitron-trained Jess Fly With Me won a conditioned allowance race by 1 1/2 lengths, and he maintained that form in his Old South Derby trial. He dominated the trial by 2 lengths, and his time of :19.448 topped the qualifiers from three trials.
J. Baxter Brinkman’s Un Coronita Porfavor (Tinys First Corona-Lavish Me Beduino by Chicks Beduino) is still a maiden after four starts, however, she boasts the second-fastest qualifying time of :19.754 with her runner-up finish behind Jess Fly With Me in their trial.
