Tommy Hays and Charles Forbes Jr.’s Open Me A Corona is in peak form to go over the $500,000 mark in career earnings when he starts in the $50,000 Juan Alleman Memorial Stakes for Louisiana-breds on Saturday night at Delta Downs.
The Bobby Martinez-trained Open Me A Corona has earned $495,442.
Open Me A Corona (Coronas Leaving You-In The Open by Mr Eye Opener) comes into the 350-yard Alleman fresh from a dominating 1 1/2 length victory in the Louisiana Downs’ version of the $35,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes. The winner of five of six starts won his first four races before a troubled sixth-place run in the $148,260 Delta Downs Louisiana-bred Derby (RG2) as the 6-5 favorite.
During a four-race winning streak opening his career, his signature win was a one-half length score in the LQHBA Futurity (RG1) in the first running that offered a $1 million purse in 2012.
Jose Guzman’s T Boy C (Sir Runaway Dash-Toast To Mallard by Toast To Dash) makes his return after winning the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Derby (RG3) on December 14 at Fair Grounds. The gelding took the derby by a neck at 3-2 odds. The Miguel Rodriguez-trained gelding has won or placed in seven stakes races and also has a win in the 2013 $84,000 Mardi Gras Derby.
Douglas Traylor’s Dashin Gage (Oak Tree Special-Dash Lady Love by Dash Thru Traffic) was second to Open Me A Corona in the Mr Jess Perry and third to T Boy C in the Champions Day Derby. The Kenny Roberts-trained gelding has won five of 14 starts and been on the board nine times.
