Open Me A Corona Wins Mr Jess Perry

The major stakes winner got back on track with a victory at Louisiana Downs.

March 1, 2014

Open Me A Corona returned to the winner’s circle on Saturday after an impressive 1 ½-length victory in the $35,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes (R) for state-breds at Louisiana Downs. It marked the first start for the 4-year-old Coronas Leaving You stallion since his perfect record ended with a sixth-place finish in the Delta Downs Louisiana-bred Derby (RG2) in July. Open Me A Corona sprinted 350 yards in :17.452 with David Alvarez aboard for trainer Bobby Martinez.

Prior to that losing effort at Delta, Open Me A Corona has won four times in as many starts, including the $1 million Louisiana QHBA Futurity (RG2) in November 2012 at Evangeline Downs. Bred by Natalie Montgomery, DVM, and owned by Tommy Hays and Charles Forbes Jr., Open Me A Corona has now earned $499,198 in his career.

Douglas Traylor’s Dashin Gage, a stakes winner last year at Evangeline, finished second. Three-time stakes winner Bipty Dash, the 9-5 favorite who had won her last five starts and nine of her last 10, finished third for owners Ivan Alford and Marty Long.
