Orions Award Takes TQHA Sires' Cup Futurity

Mystical Cartel RR and Jess Fly With Me also win stakes at Retama Park.

Retama Park’s Saturday night card featured three stakes races highlighted by the $103,234 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity (RG2) for progeny of eligible stallions. The card also included the $50,000 TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby (RG3) and $15,000 Sires’ Cup Stakes (R) for older horses.

In the richest race of the night, Juan E. Perrett Jr.’s Orions Award became a stakes winner as he prevailed by a neck at 3-1 odds with Ricardo Aguirre aboard for trainer Brian Stroud. He dashed 350 yards in :17.816.

Orions Award, a colt by Winners Award bred in Texas by Mark Nevill, DVM, broke his maiden at first asking at Sam Houston Race Park and then qualified to the John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge (G3) and finished sixth. The colt finished second in his TQHA trial and picked up $41,294 for his win in the final to increase his career bankroll to $49,252.

Bennard and Barbara Rowland’s homebred My Featured Time, a colt by Time For A God, closed well to take second at odds of 17-1. Thisroundsonme, also by Winners Award, got up for third.

In the TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby, Rafael Rodriguez Pantoja’s Mystical Cartel RR, a filly by Carters Cartel, scored by a neck to earn her first career stakes victory. Raul Gutierrez piloted the Texas-bred for trainer Erika Huitron and got the 400-yard distance in :19.953.

This marked the fifth win in 10 starts for Mystical Cartel RR and boosted her earnings to $43,828. She won a trial for the Sam Houston Derby (G3) earlier in the year and then finished eighth in the final. Bielau Oaks bred her out of the Chicks Beduino mare Mystical Rainbow.

Rightamountofwrong, a filly by Fly Jess Fly, closed to take second with Ottyes Valentine Gal, by Mr Ottyes, in third.

Huitron and Gutierrez also teamed on the winner of the Sires’ Cup Stakes as Jess Fly With Me, a 4-year-old Arkansas-bred son of Fly Jess Fly, closed to win by a head in a time of :19.855 for 400 yards. Owned by Antonio Carrizales and bred by John and Sylvia Crain, Jess Fly With Me won last year’s Retama Park Derby (G3). His record now stands at 15-6-2-0 with earnings of $99,204.
