SunRay Park featured two graded stakes on Saturday with favored Penny Snatchin winning the $45,000 Tommy “Duke” Smith Stakes (RG2) and second choice Smoke On The Water taking the $105,000 Four Corners Futurity (G3) via disqualification.

In the Tommy “Duke” Smith for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fillies, Jill Giles’ homebred Penny Snatchin broke on top and was never headed before hitting the wire a half-length in front in :19.555 for 400 yards. Jorge Bourdieu rode for trainer Wes Giles.

Penny Snatchin, a daughter of Gone To The Mountain out of the Dean Miracle mare Himaintenancegal, improved her record to 10-2-3-1 with earnings of $72,678. In her last out, she finished a close third in the SunBurst Stakes (R) at Sunland Park.

Anna and John Romero’s AJ Hardwood, by Hard Hitting, took second with Heysol Howlet’s Corona Southerndream, by Southern Corona, in third.

In the Four Corners, Mt Spit Shine crossed the wire first but was disqualified and placed eighth for interference. That sent Norma Reyes’ Smoke On The Water to the winner’s circle. The Spit Curl Jess gelding, who was bred in Kentucky by Robert Gentry out of the Smoke Glacken (TB) mare Smokin (TB), was ridden by Rick Oliver for trainer Monica Ortega.

This marked the second stakes win and third victory overall for Smoke On The Water, who also captured the AQRA President’s Spring Futurity at Turf Paradise in April. The gelding has banked $74,357.

Justin Flores’ Zoomin Jessie, a filly by Jess Zoomin, took second-place money with LD Red Hot Blue, a daughter of Saint Shackleton running for Lewis Dillree, finished third.
