March 2, 2013

After several closes finishes against stakes company, Carlos Lozano’s Political Option recorded his first career stakes victory in Saturday’s $35,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes (RG3) for state-breds at Louisiana Downs. John Hamilton rode the 4-year-old Jess Louisiana Blue gelding for trainer Kenneth Roberts Sr. The sorrel prevailed by a nose with a clocking of :17.495 for 350 yards as the 3-1 second choice.

Political Option, who is a grandson of Mr Jess Perry bred by J.E. Jumonville Jr., has now hit the board in 15 of his 18 career starts with four wins, five seconds and six thirds. His bankroll stands at $211,880 after picking up $21,000 for this latest victory. Last time out in December, he finished a close second in the Louisiana Champions Day Derby (RG3) at Fair Grounds and twice as a 2-year-old he hit the board in six-figure futurities.

Brandon Haywood’s Haystretcher, a gelding by Heza Fast Dash, finished a strong second and nearly pushed his earnings to the $200,000 mark. James Mitchell’s homebred Martini Mountain, who won the Mr Jess Perry in 2010 and finished second in the 2011 renewal, took third at odds of 23-1.
