Pure D Spit Wins Keokuk

Favorite puts up a fast time at 400 yards in Iowa.

Pure D Spit came through the as the 6-5 favorite in Saturday’s $45,000 Keokuk Stakes (G3) at Prairie Meadows. Breaking from post 2 under jockey Jesus Salazar, the 6-year-old gelding by Spit Curl Jess dueled for the lead early and then prevailed by a half-length in a time of :19.327 for 400 yards, a 106 speed index. Trained and owned by Rodrigo Covarrubias, Pure D Spit was bred by Ray Enlow in Oklahoma.

The remarkably consistent Pure D Spit came into the race with a streak of six consecutive wins, plus he had run first or second in 16 straight races. This marked his first graded stakes win and improved his record to 36-15-6-3 with earnings of $215,452.

Spit Curl Jess also sired the runner-up Eye A Spit Curl Girl, a 4-year-old mare owned by Martin Stacy. Daltsguninforsuccess, a stakes winner at Fair Meadows and Remington Park this year, took third.
