Ramirez Makes Futurity Choice

Esgar Ramirez chooses Tombstone in New Mexico Breeders Futurity.

May 30, 2012

Jockey Esgar Ramirez has a mount in virtually every important stakes race in New Mexico and he was aboard the top three qualifiers to the $85,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) on Sunday at SunRay Park.

Ramirez chose to ride third-fastest qualifier Tombstone (Get Down Perry-Because Shes Royal by Royal Quick Dash), winner of his trial by 1 1/2 lengths in :17.479 for the 350 yards as the 11-10 favorite.

The Carlos Sedillo-trained Tombstone has responded with three wins from four starts and a third-place finish in the New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) behind Ruidoso Futurity (G1) qualifier PJ Chick In Black. Tombstone, who is bred and raced by Gary Thompson of Odessa, Texas, won his first two outs, highlighted by a length win in his New Mexican Spring Futurity trial.

Topping the qualifiers was Ross and David Hinkins’ Rex Hill (Jesse James Jr-Tangled Vines by Dash Ta Fame), with a :17.405 time. After a third-place finish in his debut, he won the New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) by 1 1/4 lengths. He then took his New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity trial by 1 1/4 lengths for trainer Sedillo.

J.G. Badilla Sr.’s second-fastest qualifier Sandys Jesse (Jesse James Jr-Sandys Fame by Dash Ta Fame) makes her first futurity start and tries for her third-straight win. She won her maiden in her second start and then took her Breeders’ Futurity trial by 1 1/2 lengths in :17.439.
