Trainer Miguel Rodriguez is well prepared with four horses, topped by the second- and third-fastest qualifiers, for the $256,604 Mardi Gras Futurity (RG2), and a pair of entries, including the top qualifier, in the $95,684 Mardi Gras Derby on Saturday at Louisiana Downs.

Each of the stakes is for Louisiana-breds.

In the 300-yard futurity, Rodriguez sends out second-fastest qualifier Cajun On Star (Real Easy Okey-Dashin Chiquita by Dashin Chico), third-fastest qualifier Cocky One (Corona Cocktail-Pie For One by Pie In The Sky), sixth-fastest qualifier Victoria Sweet Angel (Jess Louisiana Blue-Kokopelli Hills by JJ Shot Glass) and ninth-fastest qualifier RDD Fishers Favorite (Bigtime Favorite-La Jollan Queen by Streakin La Jolla).

Cajun On Star and Cocky One are also owned by Rodriguez.

Lauro Bazan’s fastest qualifier Ms Jingles (Bigtime Favorite-Some Quick Dasher by Some Dasher) handled Rodriguez’s Cajun On Star in the sixth of 14 trials, with a half length win in :15.494, while Cajun On Star raced to :15.593 mark.

The Frank Cavazos-trained Ms Jingles prepared for the trials with a pair of promising works over 220 yards. She posted the eighth-fastest time from 57 horses on January 20 and recorded the 17th-fastest time from 27 horses on February 6.

Cocky One impressed with a 1¾-length trial win as the 2-1 favorite. The gelding stopped the timer in :15.611.

Jesse Rodriguez Jr.’s Victoria Sweet Angel finished with a rush in her trial to get a nose win in :15.685.

Los Primitos’ RDD Fishers Favorite battled throughout her trial and prevailed by a head in :15.752.

Topping the Rodriguez-trained pair in the derby, Ana Alvidrez’s Mr T Perry (First Prize Perry-T Storm (TB) by Salt Lake) raced to his fourth-straight win with his 11/4-length trial score, with the top time from three trials of :19.858 for 400 yards.

Mr T Perry started his winning streak at the $10,000 claiming level and followed with an allowance victory. He moved up to the stakes ranks two starts ago with a neck win in the Billy Montgomery Stakes (RG3) over state-breds, with a :17.777 mark for 350 yards.

Rodriguez is also represented by Los Primitos’ Country Talker (Straight Talker-Streakin Miranda by Streakin La Jolla) in the derby. The gelding has been third in his latest three starts, including the $161,950 Evangeline Downs Futurity and the Montgomery Stakes.
