December 15, 2012

After having a six-race win streak snapped with a close second-place effort in his last start, Rollickin Red returned to the winner’s circle after an easy victory in the $85,000 Challenger Six Handicap (R) for New Mexico-breds on Saturday at Sunland Park. The 4-year-old gelding by Roll Hennessy Roll (TB) drew clear to win the 870-yard event by 3 ¼ lengths in :44.739 as the 3-5 favorite. Casey Lambert rode for trainer Todd Fincher and owner Rollickin Red Partners of El Paso.

Bred by Robert Gentry out of the Grade 3-winning Mr Jess Perry mare Deeheiress, Rollickin Red won just one of three starts on the straightaway and dropped down to the $12,500 claiming level to break his maiden. After that win, he won five consecutive 870-yard races, including two stakes. He suffered his first defeat around the turn on October 28 when he was beaten a neck in the New Mexico Classic Cup 870 Championship (R) at Zia Park. This latest victory pushed his bankroll to $233,602.

Tony Sedillo’s D E Wagons Strawfly, who came in off a second-place finish in the King Rick Rack Stakes at Zia, got up to take second again. KC Royal Flush, the horse who upset Rollickin Red in October, crossed the wire third.
