Rylees Boy Returns in Bank of America Los Alamitos Challenge
August 16, 2013
Lorena Rodriguez’s Rylees Boy returns from a layoff to begin his racing preparations to defend his win in the 2012 $750,000 Champion of Champions when he starts in the $79,000 Bank of America Los Alamitos Challenge on Sunday night at Los Alamitos.
Rylees Boy (Heza Motor Scooter-Pipistrelle by Rocky Jones) earned his berth in this year’s Champion of Champions when he won the Los Alamitos Winter Championship by one-half length back in February. He was then rested by trainer Paul Jones until being entered in the Bank of America Los Alamitos Challenge.
The 8-year-old gelding has amassed an impressive career with 22 wins from 45 starts and flourishing at the Bank of America Los Alamitos Challenge’s distance of 440 yards. He has won 13 of 18 starts over a quarter mile, including victories last year in the Bank of America Challenge Championship (G1) and the Bank of America Remington Park Challenge (G2).
Jones will also saddle Melissa Miller’s homebred Jess Featureme Quick (Feature Mr Jess-One Quick Cookie by Royal Quick Dash) and Reed Pierson’s homebred Sparky E Boy (Hawkinson-YR Brown Lady by Lanes Leinster).
Jess Featureme Quick is trying to break a string of three second-place runs. They include the Vessels Maturity (G1) in his most recent start and the Bank of America Sunland Park Challenge (G2). He was also the runner-up in The Championship at Sunland Park (G1) back in December.
Sparky E Boy makes his 2013 debut in the Bank of America Los Alamitos Challenge. He won this race last year for his most recent win when he covered the 440 yards in :21.62 to win by one-half length.
Shane O’Leary’s Deniro (Desirio-Priscilla Ione by Mr Eye Opener) has won four of seven starts at Los Alamitos. He won the $946,000 Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1) and was second by a nose in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) last year. He comes off a fourth-place run in the Vessels Maturity (G1).
