Reed Pierson’s Sparky E Boy may have found the level to score his first win since taking the Bank of America Los Alamitos Championship Challenge (G3) when he starts in the $35,000 First Down Dash Handicap over 400 yards on Saturday night at Los Alamitos.

Sparky E Boy (Hawkinson-YR Brown Lucy by Lanes Leinster) has produced at the highest Grade 1 level as evidenced to his very close second-place finish, beaten by a nose, behind Good Reason SA in the 2011 Champion of Champions (G1).

This year, Sparky E Boy was rested after finishing eighth in the Los Alamitos Winter Championship (G1) when he lost all chance at the start when he was severely bumped.

The gelding made his return in the Bank of America Los Alamitos Challenge and responded with a one-half-length win as the 17-10 favorite. Since then, he was fourth in the Go Man Go Handicap (G1) to Cold Cash 123, fifth in the Robert L Boniface Los Alamitos Championship (G1) to Chivalry SR and fifth in the Z. Wayne Griffin Directors’ Trial to Hez Our Secret.

Balgo Racing Team’s Hot Hitter (Walk Thru Fire-Chickasis by Chicks Beduino) looks to regain the form that saw him win the 2011 Governor’s Cup Derby (RG2), finish third in the 2010 Golden State Million Futurity (G1) and qualify for the 2010 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1). The gelding returns after a sixth-place finish in the Directors’ Trial for trainer Francisco Vallejo.

The David Swelt-owned and -trained Storm Feet (Make It Anywhere-Special Copauino by Strawfly Special) was running in the $5,000 claiming ranks in April and has made huge bounds up the class ladder. He was seventh in the Los Alamitos Championship and came back to finish second in an allowance race.

Chad Hart and Bobby Cox’s Jumpn Shake (Jumpn-Jess Shakem by Mr Jess Perry), winner of the Anaheim Handicap back in February, steps up after a three-quarter-length allowance win over Storm Feet as the 9-5 favorite. He also won a Los Alamitos allowance race in September.
