Texas-bred captures richest race of the Gillespie County Fairgrounds meet.
August 26, 2012
Scoring his second stakes win of the meet, Reyes Vasquez’s Spit Curl Jesse won the $120,400 Gillespie County Fair Association Futurity (G3) at the track in Fredericksburg, Texas, on Sunday, closing day of the eight-day meet. The gelding by Spit Curl Jess also won the $37,300 TQHA Futurity (R) at Gillespie in July.
Sent off as the tepid 3-1 favorite with Thomas Ramirez riding for trainer Candelario Montes Jr., Spit Curl Jesse got up to win by a nose with a clocking of :17.618 for 350 yards. The victory was worth $42,140 and improved the Texas-bred’s earnings to $56,385 with his third win in four career starts. Juan Escalante bred the brown gelding out of the First Down Laveaux mare Linda Laveaux.
Luis Armando Castellanos’ Cougar Hill finished second with Jerry Yoakum riding for trainer Judy Beavin, and Cruisin Finish crossed the wire third.
