Garlyn Shelton’s homebred Stoli Angel appears ready to score her first stakes win when she heads the $20,000 Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge at the Denver area track on Saturday afternoon.
Stoli Angel (Stoli-Eyesa Shaker by Eyesa Special) showed stakes promise when she finished fourth behind champion PJ Chick In Black in the 2012 Ruidoso Futurity (G1). She may reach the stakes-win goal after two very close second-place finishes in stakes and an allowance win from three starts this year.
Racing for trainer John Hammes in the Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge, Stoli Angel made two starts for trainer Russell Harris at Sam Houston Race Park. She was second by a head in the $20,000 Silestone Stakes and then second by a nose in the Merial Distaff Sam Houston Challenge. She prepared for her Arapahoe Park appearance by coming through as the 5-2 favorite in a Ruidoso Downs conditioned allowance race. She won by a half length with a :17.597 time for the 350 yards.
James Lynn’s BF Pieces Of April (First Prize Perry-BF April Shower by Okey Dokey Dale) has been competitive in optional-claiming races in New Mexico this year. The Jason Giles-trained mare was third by a head and then second by head in two starts at SunRay Park for Giles’ mother Jill. She won a $10,000 optional-claiming race back in April at Sunland Park.
Yoni Martinez’s Wave Me Bye (Wave Carver-Shavanna by Shazoom) returns to recognized races for the first time since being claimed for $5,000 at Sam Houston Race Park in May 2012. She makes a big class jump in her return, with a career record of 19-4-2-4 $13,014. She races for trainer Zachary Quezada when she makes her stakes debut in the Merial Arapahoe Park Distaff Challenge.
