Olivas Racing and Javier Marquez’s Streak Hitter takes a big step in class looking for his first stakes victory and third career win in the $134,375 Sunland Park Winter Derby (G2) on Saturday afternoon at the track near El Paso.
Streak Hitter (Walk Thru Fire-Chickasis by Chicks Beduino) comes into the derby with only six career starts, however he came off a layoff to turn in a career-best performance in his Winter Derby trial. The Luis Rojero-trained gelding quickly went to the lead and rolled to a three-quarter-length score. He turned in a time of :19.575 for 400 yards in the fourth of five trials.
The trial win was his first start since a fifth-place run in a derby trial at Retama Park back in July. All four of his 2013 outs have been well spaced. His other two appearances were in January and March.
Crowson Racing’s second-fastest qualifier Charvet (One Famous Eagle-Bloomingdales by First Down Dash) makes his first stakes appearance since a fifth-place finish in the $822,000 Ruidoso Derby (G1) back in June. The Anna Crowson-trained gelding was then a close second to Brace For Bernal in their All American Derby trial at Ruidoso Downs and second in his Texas Classic Derby trial at Lone Star Park.
Charvet won his Winter Derby trial by one length with a :19.652 time.
Billy Smith’s Distant Fury (FDD Dynasty-Checknbac by Check Him Out) qualified for the 2012 $700,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) and since then has been trying to return to a stakes final. The filly from the Mike Joiner barn appears to be in improving form with a close second in an optional-claiming race and then taking her Winter Derby trial by three-quarters of a length in :19.965.
