Fastest qualifier Sweet Oblivion tops three horses owned and bred by Joe Kirk Fulton and trained by Mike Robbins in the $45,450 Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge on Saturday at Ruidoso Downs.
They will also send out third-fastest qualifier Pandorum and eighth-fastest qualifier Grace Gone Wild in the 400-yard stakes.
Sweet Oblivion (Mr Jess Perry-Daring Difference by Victory Dash) dominated her rivals in the third of three trials when she pulled away to a 3 1/4-length trial win. The Mr Jess Perry daughter raced the 400 yards in :19.867 to easily set the fastest qualifying mark. The second-fastest qualifier, Thor Of Fire, was timed in :20.134.
After one win from two starts last year, Sweet Oblivion has been perfect in two starts this year for Robbins. She won her seasonal debut by 1 1/4 lengths at Sam Houston Race Park before shipping to Ruidoso Downs.
Pandorum (Tres Seis-Daring Diversion by Strawfly Special) lost her footing at the start of her trial, however still gamely rallied to finish second behind Thor Of Fire. Last year, she won her first two starts, highlighted by a win in the John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge (G3).
Grace Gone Wild (Valiant Hero-Thrill And Grace by Mr Jess Perry) is a maiden after three starts with a second-place finish in her Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge trial. She was also second in her only start last year.
Alagar Racing’s Thor Of Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Aclassymoove by Chicks Beduino) scored his second-straight win when he took his derby trial by a half length. He narrowly won a conditioned allowance race at Remington Park in his previous start.
Mr Taka B (Feature Mr Jess-Taka Puna by Fishers Dash) tries to step up for trainer John Stinebaugh after a third-place run in his trial behind Thor Of Fire and Pandorum. He closed his 2-year-old season with a close third-place finish in the Sunland Winter Futurity (G2).
