Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches’ Tallulah Moon shoots for her third win in her four latest starts when she brings fastest-qualifier status into the $25,000 John Deere Retama Juvenile Challenge on Saturday night at Retama Park.
Also on the program is the $25,000 Adequan Retama Derby Challenge with Jerry Windham’s homebred Mister Big leading the qualifiers.
Tallulah Moon (Corona Cartel-Splendifferous by Mr Jess Perry) won her maiden in June at Ruidoso Downs and then had a horrid start in her Rainbow Futurity trial. Trainer Mike Robbins took her to Retama Park and she stepped up with a 1 1/4-length trial win. Her time of :17.984, while facing a 22 mile-per-hour headwind, was the top time from nine trials.
Michael Amburn’s Freakin Runaway (Ocean Runaway-Streakin Freakin by Streakin La Jolla) raced into a 17 mile-per-hour headwind in his Adequan Retama Derby Challenge trial and came through with the second-fastest time of :18.078. The Guy Hopkins-trained gelding has two wins and a close second in the $68,490 John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge two starts ago.
Mister Big (Shazoom-Jess An Illusion by Mr Jess Perry) comes into the Adequan Retama Derby Challenge on a roll with three straight wins, including the $48,589 TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby two starts ago. He won the derby by one length after a troubled start and then had to work harder in his Adequan Retama Derby Challenge trial. He faced a 12 mile-per-hour headwind and fought to a head win over Miss Ketel Cameo in the second of four trials.
The Judd Kearl-trained Mister Big earlier this year won the $167,300 Sam Houston Derby (G3) by a head and last year qualified for the $1 million Texas Classic Futurity (G1).
Robert Roark’s Miss Ketel Cameo (Ketel Won-Ima Miss Cameo by Cameronian) finished second to Mister Big with the second-fastest time of :20.099. She won her maiden in her previous out with a 1 1/4 length score in a Retama Park maiden race.
