Too Flash For You came into Sunday’s $85,320 New Mexico HBA Stakes (RG2) for 3-year-olds at Sunland Park with only a single victory to his credit, but the First Moonflash gelding outran his 19-1 odds and prevailed by a half-length for his first stakes victory. Larry Gamez rode the New Mexico-bred for trainer Wes Giles and owners Jim and Michelle Laird and Jose Espinosa. Too Flash For You clocked 400 yards in :18.992 with a 18 mph tail wind.
Bred by Sarah Donaldson, Too Flash For You only found the winner’s circle once in nine starts as a 2-year-old but he did qualify to four graded races and won a trial to the Zia Futurity (RG1) as the fastest qualifier. This victory marked his 3-year-old debut, and the $51,000 payday increased his lifetime earnings to $105,716.
James Baucom’s Booyah Bay, a Brookstone Bay gelding making his stakes debut, closed well to finish second. Lee Lewis, Ted Rushing and Joe Dee Brooks’ Woodys Allstar, a Woodbridge filly who won the Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) last time out at Sunland Park, finished third as the favorite.
