Coming off a third place effort in the May 30th trials, Toshi Yoshi got up late to break his maiden and win the $74,935 Cherry Creek Futurity on Sunday afternoon at Arapahoe Park.
Fastest qualifier One Corona At A Time finished third, a neck off the leaders. Under jockey Ramiro Garcia, Toshi Yoshi completed the 330 yards in a :16.757, worth a 92 speed index. The winner's purse of $29,974 boosted the Pool colt's earnings mark over $30,000 from two career starts. Manuel Orozco saddled the homebred for Dana Yoshida-Orozco.
The sorrel colt is out of Mairis Money Maker, by The Corona.
Hayjay recovered from a bumpy start to take the lead before surrendering to the winner in the final jump. It was the first loss in three starts for the Ivory James gelding owned by Hay Racing and trained by Kasey Willis.
Bred in Colorado by Bill and Marsha Drake, Hayjay won two races at Remington Park before taking his trial by one-length on May 30 while posting the second fastest qualifying time. The bay gelding is out of Hayleys My Name, by Royal Shake Em. Hayjay picked up $14,987 to push his earnings total over $36,000.
Fastest qualifier One Corona At A Time was in close early under jockey Alejandro Luna. Jose Manuel Barron conditions the One Famous Eagle filly for owner/breeder Hugo Barron Sierra. Out of the Corona For Me mare Corona For You, she earned $8,992 for the effort.
Wavin To My Doll, Now Margaret, Downlikearodeoclown, Duck Commander, Shiney Version, Feelthismomentbaby and Allaboutmeandyou completed the field.
