Trainer Gene Burden had a big day on Saturday at Sunland Park has he captured consecutive stakes races with Redneck Baptism in the $50,000 West Texas Juvenile Stakes (R) and One Lethal Blaze in the $85,320 SunBurst Stakes (R) for New Mexico-breds.
The stakes double began with Redneck Baptism, who surged to a half-length victory at odds of 6-1. The Colorado-bred filly by Wave Carver dashed 300 yards in :15.041 under Sergio Becerra Jr. The winner is owned by Luis Rogelio Nava and was bred by Red Cactus Horses LLP. The filly finished third in her West Texas Futurity (G2) trial but did not qualify to the rich final. She has earned $30,850 in her two outings.
Less than 30 minutes later, Burden saddled One Lethal Blaze to victory in the SunBurst Stakes. Also with Becerra in the irons, the filly by Chicks A Blazin got up to win the 3-year-old stakes by a neck in :17.284 for 350 yards. Bred by Mike Abraham and owned by David Valdez, One Lethal Blaze has earned $98,870 with three wins in five starts. Her only defeat in three starts this year was a fourth-place finish in the Shue Fly Stakes (RG2).
