Four trials were completed Tuesday, July 8, to determine the final field for the $100,000 Blue River Derby slated for Saturday, July 26 at Indiana Grand. The stake will join four others on the program that will be dedicated to all Quarter Horse racing, which will showcase more than $450,000 in purses for the night.
Heading the list of qualifiers for the Blue River Derby is WH Streakin Pie, winner of the first trial in a time of :20.033 for the 400-yard dash. The 3-year-old daughter of Jumpn Chic was ridden to victory by Aron Hunt. Trained by Ron Raper, Indiana Grand’s all-time leading Quarter Horse trainer, WH Streakin Pie was bred by Greg Morrison and is owned by his White Horse Ranch.
The time turned in by WH Streakin Pie was the fastest in the two years the Blue River Derby has been contested at 400 yards. Prior to 2013, the race was contested at a distance of 350 yards with the race only running 330 yards during the first five years. The previous fastest time in the stakes race was posted last year as Sum Fun For Magic and Harold Collins covered the stakes race in a time of :20.056. Other heat winners included Bye Bye Eagle, WH Design By Dash and Achieve The Speed.

Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Saturday, November 1, offering racing Tuesday and Wednesday at 2:05 p.m. with Friday and Saturday action beginning at 5:05 p.m. Thursday racing will be added at 2:05 p.m. July 17. For more information, visit indianagrand.com.
