WR Golden Eagle Soars in West Texas Futurity

Trainer Roy Marcom Jr. saddles first three finishers in rich Sunland Park stakes.

Rose Webb’s homebred WR Golden Eagle broke her maiden in style on Sunday afternoon and gave trainer Roy Marcom Jr. a sweep of the trifecta as the filly by One Famous Eagle prevailed by a head in the $284,461 West Texas Futurity (G1) at Sunland Park. Ridden by Freddie Martinez, the New Mexico-bred sprinted 300 yards in :14.862 with a 16 mph tailwind recorded.

WR Golden Eagle made her racing debut in the trials on March 22 and rallied to finish second in a time of :15.036 to give her the sixth-fastest qualifying time. She earned $1,870 for that trial effort and picked up another $133,697 for this win. Her sire, One Famous Eagle, set an all-time record last year for first-crop earnings and sired world champion One Dashing Eagle. WR Golden Eagle is the first 2-year-old stakes winner from the stallion’s second crop and his seventh stakes winner overall. WR Golden Eagle’s dam, the Lucky Aces N Eights mare WR Red Ace, was also bred and raced by Rose Webb and earned $313,416 while winning 14 of 31 career starts.

Marcom also saddled runner-up Anna Delovely, a Missouri-bred filly by Furyofthewind running for owners Vanessa Barto and Barbara Chase. Anna Delovely, who was bred by Jim Streelman and Bill Dale, finished second in her West Texas trial to fastest qualifier Dynasty Edition. Freddie Martinez rode her that day and Bonifacio Perez took over in the final as Martinez stuck with WR Golden Eagle. Anna Delovely is out of the Pritzi Dash mare Pritzi Too.

The third of the Marcom runners, Dynasty Edition, crossed the wire third with Roberto Valero up. Bred by Bill Dale and running for Dutch Masters III, Dynasty Edition was also bred in Missouri. The filly is by FDD Dynasty out of the First Place Dash mare Annual Edition. John Stinebaugh trained the trio in the trials.
