Bobby Cox’s homebred Wahoo tries for his third stakes win of the Remington Park season when he heads the $50,000 Remington Park Distance Championship (G3) at 870 yards on Sunday night, the final program of the 50-date season.
Supporting the Distance Championship is the $50,000 Easy Jet Stakes (RG3) for Oklahoma-bred 2-year-olds.
Wahoo (Feature Mr Jess-First To Celebrate by First Down Dash) looks to step up after finishing second in last year’s Distance Championship. He is on that path with wins this spring at Remington Park in the $51,800 Paul’s Valley Handicap (G3) and the $47,250 Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge (G3), each at 870 yards.
In the Paul’s Valley, the John Buchanan-trained gelding set the pace and pulled out to the 1 1/4-length score. He had to work harder in the Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge. He stalked the leader and then fought along the rail for the neck score.
Wahoo has won four of his seven starts at Remington Park with one second and a two third-place finishes.
JK Running Horses LLC’s Mixed Fantasy (Okey Dokey Fantasy-Mixin Sixin by Streakin Six) is the horse who set the pace in the Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge as the 7-10 favorite, but could not hold off Wahoo.
Mixed Fantasy earned that strong favoritism in the Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge after five-straight wins dating back to September at Prairie Meadows for a $10,000 claiming tag. During his streak he won the $25,000 Covered Bridges Stakes (G3) at Prairie Meadows and took the $35,000 SLM Big Daddy Stakes over 550 yards at Remington Park three starts ago.
In the 350-yard Easy Jet Stakes, Georgina Chavira and Rito Sosa’s PYB Place Your Bet (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Fashion Dashin by Runaway Winner) should be very dangerous after finishing second in the $370,800 Oklahoma Futurity (G2) and then defeating Oklahoma-breds in the $74,750 Laico Bird Stakes (R).
PYB Place Your Bet was second by a length in the Oklahoma Futurity to Paint Me Perry, who is the second-ranked horse in the AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com National Poll. That effort earned her 7-10 favoritism in the Laico Bird and she came through with a three-quarter-length win for trainer Luz Chavira.
Ruthardt-Wood Quarter Horses’ Days Gone Down (Shazoom-Fantastic Six by Mr Eye Opener) comes off a close second in the $100,000 Remington Park Juvenile Stakes. The Kasey Willis-trained gelding was beaten by a neck after winning his maiden by one-half length in his previous start.
