Bobby Cox’s homebred Wahoo carries high weight of 126 pounds when he makes his seasonal Ruidoso Downs debut in the $30,000 Master Salls Handicap at 870 yards on Sunday, August 10. First post time is 1 p.m. with free parking and free general admission.
Wahoo had a sensational spring at Remington Park and was named the champion distance horse for the meet. The 5-year-old gelded son of Feature Mr Jess won the Grade 3, $51,800 Paul’s Valley Handicap in his 2014 debut and also won the Grade 3, $47,250 Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge. He closed out his Remington Park campaign with a second in the Grade 3, $56,390 Remington Park Distance Championship after a stretch battle with winner Emperor Valerian. All of his Remington Park starts came at 870 yards.
Trainer John Buchanan has named Russel Hadley to ride Wahoo and they have the third post position.
Mark Allen, Leonard Blach and Butch Southway’s Linda Tee Fire totes 125 pounds after a tenacious Ruidoso Downs’ optional-claiming win in his most recent out. He dug in and battled with First To The Moon before pulling out to win the 870-yard contest by three parts of a length. He made his first 2014 out two starts ago when he was fifth in the $30,000 Fine Loom Handicap. The third-place runner in last year’s Master Salls Handicap, trainer Jimmy Bankston has named Sergio Becerra as the jockey with the seventh post position.
Louis Howard’s Jessa Little Rusty returns to Ruidoso Downs after winning the $20,000 Benny Pennington Memorial Stakes by two-and-one-half lengths at Retama Park. The Mr Jess Perry-sired gelding opened up by three lengths and then cruised to the win. He was seventh in the Fine Loom before heading to Retama Park. Omar Reyes rides Jessa Little Rusty with the sixth post position.
