Wasting No Corona Takes Sunland Futurity

Crowson family, trainer Rodrigeuz-Flores sweep exacta.

The Crowson family and trainer Victor Rodriguez-Flores had a big day on Friday as they captured the first two spots in the $197,008 Sunland Park Winter Futurity (G2). Anna Crowson’s Wasting No Corona crossed the wire a length in front of Ramblin Cartel, who runs for Anna’s parents Dennis and Norma Crowson’s Crowson Racing. Esgar Ramirez rode the winner to a 400-yard clocking in :19.079.

This marked the third consecutive victory and first stakes win for Wasting No Corona, a Texas-bred gelding by Coronas Leaving You bred by Bob and Jerry Gaston out of the Stoli mare Its Stoli Time. Wasting No Corona broke his maiden at Lone Star Park and then set the second-fastest qualifying time in the trials for this race. His record now stands at 9-3-1-2 with earnings of $119,254.

Ramblin Cartel, a gelding by Carters Cartel, finished second to complete an exacta that paid $126.20 for a $2 wager. The Oklahoma-bred gelding previously qualified to the $720,000 Remington Park Derby (R) and finished seventh.

Luis Daniel Valenzuela’s Speed Regard, a filly by Chicks Regard, got up to be third. Fastest qualifier and 3-2 favorite ICU Deity finished fifth.
