Second-fastest qualifier Wicked Valentine returned Saturday to claim a neck win over Harrisburg in the $40,230 Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge at Arapahoe Park near Denver. Eyesa Special Dasher was a nose back in the show position.
Ridden by jockey Stormy Smith, Wicked Valentine battled to lead early as he completed the 400 yard course in :19.584, a 98 speed index. The $24,138 winner's purse boosted his career total to $64,667.
The homebred for Brad and Ann Tate also earned a starting spot in the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G1) at Prairie Meadows on October 18.
Charley Hunt conditions the gelded son of all-time leading first crop sire One Famous Eagle from the First Down Dash mare Only The Wicked. Wicked Valentine now has a 10-2-4-0 record.
Harrisburg earned $8,046 for his second-place effort. The Azoom colt races for Junior's Quarter Horses Inc. and is trained by Jorge Miranda. Ramiro Garcia was aboard. Robert Gentry bred Harrisburg in Kentucky from the Dash For Cash mare Fearless Freda.
Enrique Rios saddled Eyesa Special Dasher for owners Pedro and Lilia Andazola. Ridden by Jose Ruiz, the lightly raced Eyesa Special gelding earned $4,023. Tripe M Farms LLC bred the brown gelding in Louisiana from the First Down Dash mare Dashin In My Dreams.
Fastest qualifier A Priceless Gal finished fourth, followed by Tollie Rossel, Heza Volcom, Kittys Fast Wagon, Little Jack Conner and Ocean Patriot.
