AQHA Novice Championship ShowsIf your state or provincial affiliate is not listed below, please contact your affiliate for their state/provincial qualifying methods for the AQHA Novice championship shows.

Each state or provincial affiliate will submit three state qualifiers per class to AQHA. If there are not three qualifiers in a particular class the affiliate may move that "slot" to another class and submit four in a particular class; however, no more than six state qualifiers will be allowed in any particular class.

Alabama

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • All Novice youth and Novice amateurs will earn state affiliate show points at any Alabama Quarter Horse Association approved show.
  • Participants must be a member in good standing of ALQHA/Alabama Quarter Horse Youth Association, as well as AQHA.
  • ALQHA/ALQHYA will tally the total points for each exhibitor in each of their classes shown, based on the ALQHA points system shown in the 2011 ALQHA by-laws.
  • ALQHA/ALQHYA will invite the top-three high-point earning exhibitors in each of the Novice disciplines being held at the Novice championship shows.
  • Points are compiled on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis. In the event of a tie, the exhibitor placing at the most shows will break the tie.

Alaska

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • All Novice youth and Novice amateur exhibitors will earn state affiliate show points at six shows
  • Must be a member in good standing with AQHA and Alaska State Quarter Horse Association.
  • ASQHA will submit the top-three point earning exhibitors in each of the Novice classes for an invitation to the Novice championship shows to AQHA.
  • Points will be compiled on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.
  • In the event of a tie, the exhibitor placing in the most shows will break the tie.
  • An exception could be allowed for the top-three amateur point earners in Alaska to compete at the Novice championships if the spots are not filled by the Novice point earners

State points are awarded based on the number of horses in the class and the exhibitor placing. The maximum points earned in a class are nine. Listed below is how state points are awarded per the Novice Championship Show state qualifying system.

  • The top-three point earners in each Novice class
  • Exhibitors must have competed in a minimum of six shows.
  • An exception could be allowed for the top-three amateur point earners in Alaska to compete at the Novice championships if the spots are not filled by the Novice point earners.

Arizona

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • To state qualify for the AQHA Novice championship shows, you must show in Novice classes and be judged five times during the year and the exhibitor must earn at least five state points in the class. The first three Novice exhibitors at the end of qualifying date with the most points in eligible classes will be extended a state qualifying invitation to the Novice championship shows.
  • Arizona Quarter Horse Association will provide the list of state qualifiers to AQHA.
  • AzQHA or Arizona Quarter Horse Youth Association membership is required.
  • Points are compiled on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.

Arkansas

  • Qualification will be based upon class placing at Arkansas-approved horse shows.
  • Exhibitors must be Arkansas Quarter Horse Association members.
  • Points will be computed in the same manner as points for year-end awards.
  • The top-three individuals in each Novice class offered at the AQHA Novice championship shows who are not nationally qualified will be invited to the championship shows as a state qualifier.
  • In case of a tie for the top three spots, all tied exhibitors/horses will be invited.
  • Exhibitors interested in qualifying must complete a Novice championship shows letter of ntent.

California

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Association will provide the list of state qualifiers to AQHA.
  • AQHA will send an invitation to the state qualifiers to attend one of two shows: Las Vegas and Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
  • PCQHA membership is required.
  • Classes offered and their qualifying point requirements are listed below.
  • In classes requiring 18 points, exhibitors must show to at least 10 AQHA judges per class at PCQHA approved shows, and earn the required PCQHA points to qualify.
  • In classes requiring 4.5 points, exhibitors must show to at least four AQHA judges per class at PCQHA approved shows, and earn the required PCQHA points to qualify.
  • If the required number of judges is not available due to classes not being offered during the qualifying period, the exhibitor will then be eligible for qualification based on the required points earned.

Delaware

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Participants must be a member in good standing of Delaware Quarter Horse Association and AQHA. 
  • The top-three exhibitors in Delaware will be permitted to attend in each class at the Novice championships. 
  • Exhibitors must show to at least five judges during the qualifying period.

Florida

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – April 30, 2012

  • Points will be tabulated on each Novice exhibitor and horse combination using the top 10 class scores in each Novice event.
  • The exhibitor must be a member of the Florida Quarter Horse Association.

Georgia

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Points will be computed in the same manner as points for year-end awards.
  • The top three individuals in each Novice class offered at the Championship Show that is not nationally qualified will be invited to the Championship show as a State Qualifier.
  • No invitations will be extended past the top three state qualifiers.
  • There will only be invitations extended in classes where there was participation.
  • No invitations will be sent or transferred to exhibitors who did not show in said classes, and were not in the top three state qualifiers for that particular class.

Idaho

The Novice championships qualifying shows for the state of Idaho are as follows:

  • March 24-25, Caldwell, Idaho
  • May 12, Pocatello, Idaho
  • May 25-28, Nampa Golden Spud, Nampa, Idaho
  • June 2-3, Rocky Mountain Classic, Pocatello, Idaho
  • June 8-10, Silver Spur Circuit, Nampa, Idaho

The Idaho Quarter Horse Association will use a point system at the above listed five shows to determine the qualifiers for the Novice championships. State points are awarded based on the number of horses in the class and the exhibitor placing. The maximum points earned in a class are nine. The first, second and third place contestants at the end of the series will be able to attend the AQHA Novice championship shows.

Illinois

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012

  • No more than 120 exhibitor names may be submitted.
  • Participants must be a member in good standing of the Illinois Quarter Horse Association or the Illinois Quarter Horse Youth Association.
  • Interested participants must submit the “letter of intent to participate” form to the IQHA office prior to June 30, 2012, in order to express interest in qualifying through IQHA. The letter of intent will assist the association in identifying those individuals who wish to participate in the Novice championship shows although their area of interest/expertise may not be a class that is offered in many or any shows in the state. See the IQHA website for the letter of intent.
  • In areas/classes where there is greater competition or interest, state points (in Novice categories) towards year-end awards will be used to determine the names submitted.
  • Points will be compiled on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.

Indiana

Qualifying Period: November 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Participants must be a member in good standing of Indiana Quarter Horse Association, as well as AQHA.
  • The highest placing non-national qualifier in each class will be submitted to AQHA as IQHA’s state qualifier.

Iowa

Qualifying Period: January 1, 2012 - June 30, 2012 (for 2012 only. The qualifying period for the 2013 Novice championships will be from July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013.)

  • Participants must be members of the Iowa Quarter Horse Association/Iowa Quarter Horse Youth Association prior to any state qualifying points being earned. Any sponsorships required must also be paid prior to points counting.
  • Novice amateur and Novice youth will earn qualifying points based on our current state year end awards point system, at any IQHA-approved show held within the qualifying period. Points are earned on a per horse/exhibitor combination.
  • IQHA/IQHYA will invite the top-three high point earning exhibitors in each class offered at the AQHA Novice Championships, using each exhibitor’s best six shows (judges) within the qualifying period. (This matches up with the IQHYA Youth World Show state qualifying rules).
  • In the event that an exhibitor declines an invitation, the next highest point earner will be offered an invite to allow three state qualified entries to go.
  • In the event of ties in qualifying points, the tie breaker system used for our year-end awards shall be applied to determine the top-three qualifiers.
  • From AQHA: If there are not three qualifiers in a particular class, the affiliate may move that “slot” to another class and submit four in a particular class; however, no more than six state qualifiers will be allowed in a particular class.
  • Exhibitor enters/attends the Novice championships solely at their own expense. IQHA/IQHYA only provides the opportunity to qualify to enter.

Kansas

  • The top-three riders earning the most Kansas Quarter Horse Association/Kansas Quarter Horse Youth Association Novice points from May 1, 2011, to June 30, 2012, will be qualified to enter the AQHA Novice championship shows in either Murfreesboro, Tennessee, or Las Vegas.
  • In the event of a tie, the person with the most number of points earned in the least amount of shows will be the representative.
  • Kansas is allowed to have a total of 120 exhibitors (three per class): reining, showmanship, horsemanship, equitation, halter (all age breakdowns), western pleasure, hunter under saddle, trail, western riding, barrels, and poles.
  • KQHA qualifiers must be a member in good standing, and must volunteer at least one KQHA/KQHYA show, serve on a committee or hold a board/officer position.
  • Qualifiers must reside in Kansas.

Kentucky

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Qualification will be based upon class placing at Kentucky affiliated approved horse shows.
  • Exhibitors must be Kentucky Quarter Horse Association members.
  • Points will be allocated in the same manner as in our year-end awards program.
  • KyQHA will submit up to three state qualifiers per class to AQHA. If there are not three qualifiers in all classes, non-filled “slots” will be re-allocated to those classes already with three qualifiers; a maximum of up to six qualifiers can then be recommended to AQHA.

Louisiana

To qualify in a specific class for the Novice championship shows as a member of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Association, each exhibitor must be a member in good standing by January 31 of that year and:

  • Have the highest number of LQHA points in a specific amateur/youth class during the qualifying period -or-
  • Have the second highest number of LQHA points in a specific amateur/youth class during the qualifying period -or-
  • Have the highest number of points in a specific amateur/youth class and have attended the most LQHA-approved shows during the qualifying period without qualifying by the above two methods.
  • Three people are eligible in each class.

Maine

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • The top six show scores for a horse/rider combination in each Novice class from the 2011 July Firecracker and the 2012 May Pine Tree Classic will be used to determine the horse/rider combination who will represent Maine Quarter Horse Association at the AQHA Novice championship shows. Only one horse/rider combination per Novice class will be nominated by MeQHA for the Novice championships.
  • The exhibitor must be a member in good standing of MeQHA and AQHA.

Massachusetts

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Must be a member, in good standing with Massachusetts Quarter Horse Association during the qualifying period.
  • Must have shown at either the MassQHA Novice/Open Show (April) and/or the MassQHA
    Annual Shows (May).
  • Must have fulfilled the "Two Meeting Rule." (See MassQHA handbook)
  • Must submit a letter of intent to the MassQHA board of directors for each horse/exhibitor combination.
  • If a Novice class is not offered at MassQHA qualifying shows, the exhibitor who has competed elsewhere at AQHA-approved events may still qualify by submitting the results of those events to the board of directors.
  • In case of a tie, the exhibitor who showed in the greatest number of shows will qualify. If there is still a tie, the exhibitor with the most points will qualify.

Michigan

Qualifying Period: January 1, 2012 – June 30, 2012

  • All Novice Youth and Novice Amateur exhibitors will earn state affiliate show points at any Michigan Quarter Horse Association-approved show during the qualifying period.
  • The exhibitor must be a member in good standing of AQHA and MQHA.
  • MQHA will tally the total points for each exhibitor in each of the classes.
  • MQHA will submit the top three point earning exhibitors in each of the Novice disciplines being held at the Novice championship shows.
  • Points are compiled on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.
  • State points will be awarded based on the number of horses in a class and the exhibitor placing. The maximum points earned in one class is nine.

Minnesota

Qualifying Period: January 1, 2012 - June 30, 2012

  • All Novice youth and Novice amateur exhibitors will earn state affiliate show points at Minnesota Quarter Horse Association-approved shows.
  • Must be a member in good standing with AQHA and MnQHA.
  • MnQHA will submit the top-three point earning exhibitors in each of the Novice classes for an invitation to the Novice championship shows to AQHA.
  • Points will be compiled on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.
  • In the event of a tie, the exhibitor placing in the most shows will break the tie.

Mississippi

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Must be a member of Mississippi Quarter Horse Association or Mississippi Quarter Horse Youth Association, as well as AQHA.
  • Novice points will only be counted at MQHA-approved shows.
  • The top-three exhibitors in each Novice class scheduled for the Novice championship shows, with halter as an exception, that are not nationally qualified and have shown to five judges during the point year will be qualified.
  • The top-three Novice exhibitors in the amateur and youth halter classes that show to five judges and are not nationally qualified will be selected to participate.
  • All interested exhibitors must submit a “letter of intent to participate” by April 30 of the show year. The letter does not obligate the exhibitor to participate, however, contestants that do not submit a letter will not be considered in the selection qualification process.
  • Open slots not filled by the regular selection process will be filled by the Novice exhibitors that have shown to five judges, have earned most Novice points in all classes and have submitted a “letter of intent.”

Missouri

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Missouri Quarter Horse Association will invite the top-three high-point earning exhibitors in each class offered at the AQHA Novice championships, using each exhibitor’s best eight shows (judges) within the qualifying period.
  • Novice amateur and Novice youth will earn qualifying points based on our current state year-end awards point system at any MQHA-sanctioned shows held within the qualifying period. Points are earned on a per horse/exhibitor combination.
  • In the event of a tie, the exhibitor placing in the most shows will break the tie.
  • Qualifiers must be MQHA members prior to any state qualifying points being earned.
  • From AQHA: If there are not three qualifiers in a particular class, the affiliate may move that “slot” to another class and submit four in a particular class; however, no more than six state qualifiers will be allowed in a particular class.

Montana

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Montana Quarter Horse Association exhibitors who show at the regional and Region Two Championship shows the previous year.
  • Allow the top-five point earners in each discipline of Novice youth and Novice amateur to qualify from that year.
  • Allow the top-five point earners in each discipline up to the deadline for the qualifying period for that year.
  • Each qualifier will not be limited to the specific disciplines in which they qualified for, but will be allowed to show in as many classes as they choose.
  • If by chance in a class, the exhibitor's slot limit is exceeded, the Montana slots will be filled according to the exhibitor’s points. The highest point earners will fill the allowed slots.

Nebraska

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Must show in 10 AQHA shows (10 judges) not necessarily Nebraska Quarter Horse Association shows, but preference will be to the exhibitor who does support NQHA-owned shows.
  • A maximum of three exhibitors per class allowed.
  • Exhibitor must be a member of NQHA.
  • Invitations will be extended to the lower-tiered exhibitor if the first, second, or third place exhibitor does not fill his/her slot.

Nevada

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • The interested party must be a member in good standing of the Nevada Quarter Horse Association, and
  • Provide the letter of intent form to NQHA by June 15 or sooner, and
  • Exhibit to one judge at a show sponsored by NQHA in the qualifying period

New Hampshire

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Be a New Hampshire resident during the AQHA qualifying period.
  • Be a New Hampshire Quarter Horse Association member of good standing during the whole of the qualifying period and at the time of the AQHA Novice championship shows.
  • Exhibit in any AQHA-approved Novice classes in at least two NHQHA-sponsored shows. Showing in a double-judged class will equal two shows.

New Jersey

  • Comply with 2011-2012 New Jersey Quarter Horse Association high point award rules (www.njqha.com).
  • Must nominate in Novice division for 2011 and 2012
  • Points will be tallied per NJQHA high point award rules.
  • The top-three exhibitors in each class offered at the AQHA Novice championship shows that are not nationally qualified or that are not qualified in another class will be submitted to AQHA to enter any Novice class in their division.
  • Once qualified for the Novice championships, the exhibitor is eligible to enter any Novice class in their division.
  • Exhibitors enter/attend the AQHA Novice championship shows at their own expense. NJQHA provides the opportunity to qualify.

New Mexico

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • The top-three Novice youth and/or Novice amateur New Mexico Quarter Horse Association point earners in each of the Novice youth/Novice amateur classes will be invited to represent New Mexico at one of the two AQHA Novice championship shows.
  • Novice qualifiers must be residents of the state of New Mexico.
  • Novice qualifiers must be current members in good standing to the NMQHA by May 1 of the qualifying year.
  • Once invited to compete at the AQHA Novice championship shows, the Novice youth/Novice amateur may enter any class at the Novice championship show.
  • Points will be kept in accordance with the current NMQHA point system as described in NMQHA rule book.

New York

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Additional invitees must be members of their state affiliate (Empire State Quarter Horse Association).
  • The three highest point earning exhibitors from the following shows will be invited:

Spring Fling, Hamburg, New York
New York State Quarter Horse Association, Cobbleskill, New York
ESQHA/Empire State Quarter Horse Youth Association, Syracuse, New York

North Carolina

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • All Novice youth and Novice amateurs will earn state affiliate show points at any North Carolin Quarter Horse Association-approved show.
  • Must be a member in good standing of AQHA and NCQHA.
  • NCQHA will tally the total points for each exhibitor in each of their classes shown.
  • NCQHA will submit the top-three point earning exhibitors in each of the Novice disciplines being held at the Novice championship shows.
  • Points are compiled on one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.

North Dakota

Qualifying Period: January 1-June 30, 2012

  • Participants must be members of the North Dakota Quarter Horse Association and North Dakota Quarter Horse Amateur Association/North Dakota Quarter Horse Youth Association prior to any state qualifying points being earned. Any sponsorships required must also be paid prior to points counting.
  • Novice amateur and Novice youth will earn qualifying points based on NDQHA current state year-end awards point system at any NDQHA-approved show held within the qualifying period. Points are earned on a per horse/exhibitor combination.
  • NDAQHA/NDQHYA will invite the top-three high-point earning exhibitors in each class offered at the AQHA Novice championships within the qualifying period.
  • In the event an exhibitor declines an invitation, the next highest point earner will be offered an invite to allow three state qualified entries to go.
  • In the event of ties in qualifying points, the tie-breaker system used for NDQHA year-end awards shall be applied to determine the top-three qualifiers.
  • From AQHA: If there are not three qualifiers in a particular class, the affiliate may move that “slot” to another class and submit four in a particular class; however, no more than six state qualifiers will be allowed in a particular class.
  • Exhibitor enters/attends the Novice championships solely at their own expense; NDAQHA/NDQHYA only provides the opportunity to qualify to enter.

Ohio

  • For the Ohio Quarter Horse Association qualifying period for the AQHA Novice championship shows, points will be counted from Saturday and Sunday shows only of the Southern Ohio Quarter Horse Association-sponsored Winter Circuit in March through June 30 inclusive.
  • The point system for selection of exhibitors to the Novice championship shows will be 30 points maximum awarded to each class.
  • Points will be awarded on the basis of one point for each horse the exhibitor defeats plus one point for the exhibitor up to nine places.
  • The person’s best 10 shows in the qualifying period will count, subject to the requirements of placing in a minimum of three shows and accumulating at least 10 points in the qualifying period.
  • In the case of all ties involving exhibitors for the Novice championship shows, calculate additional shows beyond 10, one at a time until the tie is broken.
  • If a tie still exists with respect to a particular class, the age factor will determine the representative, first by show age, and then, if necessary, by actual calendar age, with the older exhibitor to be chosen.
  • OQHA will submit the top-three point earning exhibitors in each of the Qualifying novice classes to AQHA by August 1, 2012.
  • If any of the top-three point earning exhibitors is nationally or regionally qualified, the next exhibitor in the state point standings that has met all requirements would be eligible.
  • Exhibitors must be in good standing with OQHA.
  • Exhibitors must reside in Ohio.
  • Points will be on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.

Oklahoma

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Individuals must be a current member of Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association.
  • The circuits for qualifying would be:

Oregon

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Any Novice member planning to attend the AQHA Novice championship shows will need to fill out a declaration form by March 1 of the qualifying year.
  • Be an Oregon Quarter Horse Association member by February 1.
  • The declaration is for the Novice member. Multiple horses may be declared on one form.
  • The three contestants in each Novice class who accumulates the most points through June 30 of each year shall be eligible to represent Oregon at the Novice championship shows.
  • The classes to be represented are the classes listed specifically as Novice classes:

Halter
Western riding
Showmanship
Western pleasure
Hunter under saddle
Hunt seat equitation
Trail
Barrel Racing
Pole Bending
Reining

  • Anyone wishing to participate in any classes not listed must petition the OQHA Board of Directors.

Pennsylvania

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012

  • All Novice youth and Novice amateur exhibitors will earn state affiliate show points at any Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association-approved show during the qualifying period.
  • The exhibitor must be a member in good standing of AQHA and PQHA.
  • The exhibitor must nominate for PQHA Novice points. Points nomination rules will follow rules as outline for year-end award point nominations. For complete eligibility, exhibitor must nominate for both 2011 and 2012 year-end points. There are no additional forms required for Novice championship points to be tabulated.
  • PQHA will tally the total points for each exhibitor in each of the classes.
  • PQHA will submit the top-three point earning exhibitors in each of the Novice disciplines being held at the Novice championship shows.
  • Points are compiled on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.
  • State points will be awarded based on the number of horses in a class and the exhibitor placing. The maximum points earned in one class is nine.

South Carolina

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Priority will be given to South Carolina residents. However, other state residents will be allowed to participate on the South Carolina Novice championship show team.
  • Membership in South Carolina Quarter Horse Association will be required.
  • A letter of intent must be completed, similar to that done for the Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show participants.
  • The top-three exhibitors in SCQHA in each Novice class will be invited to participate from South Carolina.
  • Team members must volunteer four hours to the affiliate or provide sponsorship of $25/hr in lieu of volunteer time.

South Dakota

To qualify for the AQHA Novice championship shows through the South Dakota affiliate, the exhibitor bust be a member in good standing with the South Dakota Quarter Horse Association and must send a completed letter of intent to SDQHA at PO Box 35, Groton, SD 57445, by no later than May 15, 2012.

Tennessee

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

All Novice youth and Novice amateur exhibitors will earn state affiliate qualifying status by attending Tennessee Quarter Horse Association-approved shows according to the following guidelines approved by the TQHA Board of Directors:

  • Must be a member in good standing with AQHA and TQHA.
  • Must obtain a TQHA competition card by May 1, 2012, to establish intent to qualify in accordance with TQHA bylaws.
  • 120 exhibitors will be qualified by the highest number of TQHA shows attended during the qualifying period and compiled on a one horse, one exhibitor basis, with the following exception:

a). Due to the few TQHA shows with speed events, two slots will be reserved for each of these classes: Novice amateur barrels, Novice amateur poles, Novice youth barrels and Novice youth poles.

b). In the event of one of these speed events not having two exhibitors wishing to attend the AQHA Novice championships, a third exhibitor from the same age group will be accepted from the other class in the age group.

In the event of any speed event not filling with two exhibitors according to a). and b). above, the slot will be opened for the next exhibitor in any class qualifying by number of shows attended.

  • In the event of a tie, the exhibitor placing in the most shows will break the tie.
  • TQHA will submit the top 120 exhibitors from Tennessee as entries for the Novice classes held at the Novice championship shows to AQHA.
  • Hardship requests by exhibitors from surrounding states who normally show in Tennessee should be established by letter to the TQHA Executive Secretary by May 1, 2012, and will be considered on an individual basis.

Texas

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Qualifiers must be current members of Texas Quarter Horse Association.
  • The winners of each Novice youth and Novice amateur Champion of Champions class receives an automatic invite (provided they are legal residents of Texas).
  • All Novice youth and Novice amateur TQHA members will earn state affiliate show points at any TQHA-approved show.
  • The top-two highest point earners from combined total points earned at all TQHA-approved shows will be invited to compete as state entries at the AQHA Novice championship shows.
  • Points are compiled for a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.

Virginia

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • The exhibitor must compete in at least 20 AQHA shows (i.e., showing to 20 AQHA judges) during the qualifying period. Of these 20 shows, a minimum of 10 shows must be located in the state of Virginia, -or- the exhibitor must have placed in the top 10 in their respective regional championship show during the qualifying period.
  • Must be a member in good standing of the Virginia Quarter Horse Association during the qualifying period.
  • Must reside in the state of Virginia.
  • A total of 120 exhibitors from Virginia are allowed to compete in any given Novice championship show per year.
  • The exhibitor must earn a minimum of 12 VQHA points in one Novice class during the qualifying period to be eligible for a Novice championship show. After an exhibitor has earned 12 points in one Novice class during the qualifying period, he/she is eligible to enter all Novice classes at the Novice championship show.

Washington

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • For all events, excluding showmanship, horsemanship and hunt seat equitation (see below): The top-two placings from the May Trophy Circuit and one additional placing from the June Rookie Novice Show that did not qualify at the May Trophy Circuit.
  • For showmanship, horsemanship and hunt seat equitation only: The top-five placings at the May Trophy Circuit and one additional placing from the June Rookie Show that did not qualify at the May Trophy Circuit. (Washington State Quarter Horse Association will be taking the top six in these events due to the fact that WSQHA does not offer speed events.)

West Virginia

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • All Novice youth and Novice amateur exhibitors will earn state affiliate show points at 12 shows.
  • Must be a member in good standing with AQHA and West Virginia Quarter Horse Association.
  • WVQHA will submit the top-three point earning exhibitors in each of the Novice classes for an invitation to the Novice championship shows to AQHA.
  • Points will be compiled on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.
  • In the event of a tie, the exhibitor placing in the most shows will break the tie.

  • WQHA/WQHYA will invite the top-three high-point earning exhibitors in each class offered at the AQHA Novice championships, using our current state year-end awards point system.
  • In the event that an exhibitor declines an invitation, the next highest point earner will be offered an invite to allow three state qualified entries to go.
  • Exhibitor enters/attends the Novice championships solely at their own expense. WQHA/WQHYA only provides the opportunity to qualify.
  • The qualifying period for future AQHA Novice championships will remain January 1 – June 30 of the current year.

Wyoming

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Must be current Wyoming Quarter Horse Association member.
  • The three individuals with the most WQHA points in any Novice class will have their names submitted to AQHA as being qualified to participate in any Novice class offered at the AQHA Novice championship shows.

Alberta

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • Must hold a current premium membership (amateur or youth) with the Quarter Horse Association of Alberta and be a member in good standing.
  • Must submit a letter of intent to the QHAA board of directors by June 30, 2012.
  • Must be an Alberta resident.
  • QHAA reserves the right to send up to 120 exhibitors in total to AQHA Novice championship shows as per the advisory board.

British Columbia

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • The British Columbia Quarter Horse Association high-point and reserve high-point winners for Novice classes in the previous calendar year are deemed to be qualified (i.e. 2011 calendar year for the 2012 Novice championships) -or-
  • Have shown in Novice classes in six BCQHA-approved shows during the qualifying period (i.e. May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012) -or-
  • Exhibitor placing in the top 10 at the AQHA Regional Championship Show.
  • Must be a member of the BCQHA affiliate.
  • Invitations will not be extended should an exhibitor not fill his or her slot.

Manitoba

Qualifying Period: May 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012

  • All Novice youth and Novice amateur exhibitors will earn state affiliate show points at X number of shows (or X number of listed shows as determined by the state affiliate board of directors)
