Long established as a strong marketplace for the performance horse, the 2012 Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo Horse Sale in Rapid City, South Dakota, once again broke all previous records. Now into its 54th year, the sale was held January 27-28 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. A screening process produced a strong offering of 160 head over the two-day sale.

Following a preview each morning at the James Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds, the 2012 First Interstate Bank Horse Sale was presented in the Crystalyx BioBarrel Show Ring in Rushmore Hall. The sale corporate sponsors included First Interstate Bank, Ravelette Publications, Cattle Business Weekly and Larry Larson Photography. Auctioneer Lynn Weishaar of Reva, South Dakota, and announcer John E. Johnson of Piedmont, South Dakota, rolled through the two-day sale that broke yet another record – an overall average of $5,521.93.

For the second year in a row, a son of Nic It In The Bud was the high-selling consignment at the BHSS sale. By Reminic and out of Genuine Redbud by Genuine Doc, the 1997 bay stallion Nic It In The Bud has combined lifetime earnings of $148,765, which he earned in National Reined Cow Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association and National Cutting Horse Association competition. Nic It In The Bud’s offspring earnings are nearing $1 million. Topping the 2012 sale after active bidding was Nic It Rey, a 2009 sorrel gelding out of the Dual Rey daughter Miss Solano Rey. Consigned by Cowan Select Horses LLC of Havre, Montana, and shown by Zach Iddings, the 14.3-hand prospect left the ring at the Saturday sale on a bid of $21,000 from Annette Baumeister of Piedmont, South Dakota.

Also consigned to the Saturday sale was the 2004 buckskin gelding Shine N Reno, consigned by Levi Grimes of Kadoka, South Dakota. Sired by Smart Shiner, Shine N Reno is out of the mare Cowboys Prescription, an own daughter of Diggers Rest by Peppy San Badger. With Doc’s Prescription also on the bottom side, Shine N Reno was promoted as “broke, broke, broke” and as a finished bridle horse, with more than $3,200 in NRCHA earnings. Harold Hagen of Crosby, North Dakota, had the final bid on this 14.3-hand finished arena performer at $18,750.

Another highlight was on the Friday sale offering: Gun A Play A Little, consigned by Tom & Sonya Coolahan of Hermosa, South Dakota. The 2006 bay gelding, sired by PG Golden Gun by Playgun and out of a Smart Little Lena-Doc’s Sug mare, captured the reserve championship earlier in the day in the Championship of the Ranch Horse Select competition. The finished ranch and arena performer, with lifetime earnings of more than $5,000, caught the eye of Josh Leddy, a resident of Virgil, South Dakota, and commanded a bid of $18,000.

Fifteen of the region’s leading American Quarter Horse sires were once again showcased on Stallion Row during the first weekend of the BHSS; these stallions were also presented in the sale ring prior to each sale.

Offered once again was the People’s Choice Award for the best stall and stallion presentation during the event. Sponsored by Larry Larson Photography of Rapid City, South Dakota, the BHSS People’s Choice Award was presented to Nu N Shiney, owned by Bud Fay, Gillette, Wyoming.
Sale coverage was provided by Alan and Cindy Taylor of www.horseauctions.com, which provided coverage of the two-day sale and the ongoing live webcasts of daily activities from the Event Center.

Championship of Ranch Horse Select

The first 16 consignments in the 2012 Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo Horse Sale catalog competed for the Championship of the Ranch Horse Select. Now in its fourth year, the event was held on the morning of January 27 during the preview of sale consignments.

Sponsored by Lynn and Connie Weishaar, the 2012 Ranch Horse Select championship was awarded to Pony Expresso, a 2001 blue roan gelding. Owned and raised by Dawn and Wilbur Newland of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, the gelding is by their ranch sire Lucky Joe Lynx, a son of Doc’s Lynx and out of a Colonel Freckles-Doc’s Prescription mare.

Consigned by Tom and Sonya Coolahan of Hermosa, South Dakota, Gun A Play A Little won the reserve championship, an award sponsored by John E. Johnson. The 2006 bay gelding is sired by PG Golden Gun and out of a Smart Little Lena-Doc’s Sug mare.
