National Western Stock Show

The National Western Stock Show in Denver and AQHA Corporate Partner Zoetis are working together to protect your horse.

In recent years, the show season has included the news of disease outbreaks that can pose a threat to the health of performance horses. More and more, horse owners are searching for simple and effective techniques to help protect their horses from these threats year round.

Knowledge and the practice of basic biosecurity have become critical for horse health. An eye to sanitation and disinfection, as well as proper vaccinations and veterinary care, will help to assure a healthy environment.

  • When at the show grounds, exhibitors should avoid taking their horses to common water or feed areas and sharing water buckets, lip chains, feed tubs, halters or other items that might touch a horse’s mouth, nose or eyes.
  • If you have to share items, be sure to follow proper sanitation and disinfection techniques first.
  • Any horse that shows signs of being unwell should be isolated as quickly as possible.

Of course, a carefully designed vaccination program, created in cooperation with a veterinarian, is one of the best means of helping horses remain healthy during the show.

Even one case of equine influenza can cost more than $885 in treatment and lost training! The risk of disease can be reduced by more than 70 percent just by vaccinating more than once per year.

For these reasons, the National Western Stock Show has again partnered with Zoetis (manufacturers of Fluvac Innovator and Nolvasan) for the second annual Equine Bio-Health program, which is a two-pronged approach designed to lessen the risk of disease.

  1. Talk with your veterinarian about vaccinating your horse for equine influenza and rhinopnuemenitis at least three weeks prior to arriving at the 2014 National Western Stock Show in Denver. This time is required for a full stimulation of the immune system.
  2. The stall areas in the Events Center, Coliseum and the Hall of Education will be disinfected with Nolvasan prior to the start of the Pre-Denver Quarter Show and again between each show.

Upon check-in, you will receive additional information about the program. NWSS staff are also always available to answer your questions. For more information on the 2014 National Western Stock Show, visit www.nationalwestern.com.
