The Rundown: Cutting Action

Following a full day of cutting, the finalists for the open and non-pro divisions of the Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting at the 2011 Battle in the Saddle, presented by RFD-TV, have been decided.

Day one of the 2011 Battle in the Saddle, presented by RFD-TV, at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City has wrapped up. After a full day of cutting, the dust has settled and nine qualifiers for the Mercuria/National Cutting Horse Association World Series of Cutting open finals and 10 qualifiers for the non-pro finals were announced.

Battling it out at 6 p.m. July 6 in the World Series open finals in this working order are:

  1. Tom Lyons and Faith In My Cat, a 2003 sorrel gelding by High Brow Cat and out of Faith In Your Mate by Smart Mate, owned by Tom Lyons Inc.
  2. Austin Shepard and Bet Hesa Cat, a 2006 red roan stallion by High Brow Cat and out of Bet Yer Blue Boons by Freckles Playboy, owned by Bet Hesa Cat Syndicate
  3. Jeremy Barwick and Cats Greystone, a 2006 gray stallion by High Brow Cat and out of Aristolcrat by Smart Aristocrat, owned by Nicky Prejean
  4. Phil Rapp and Dont Look Twice, a 2005 sorrel mare by High Brow Cat and out of Tapt Twice by Dual Pep, owned by Waco Bend Ranch Ltd.
  5. Phil Rapp and SDP Tapt Dancing, a 2005 sorrel mare by TR Dual Rey and out of Tapt Twice by Dual Pep, owned by Paul and Jackie Fehrenbach
  6. Ed Dufurrena and Auspicious Cat, a 2005 sorrel gelding by High Brow Cat and out of Lenas O Lady by Peppy San Badger, owned by Dos Cats Partners
  7. Dustan Horne and CA Las Vegas Lights, a 1999 sorrel gelding by Smart Mate and out of Real Plain Jane by Real Doc, owned by Anderson Cattle Company
  8. Wesley Galyean and That Catomine, a 2005 sorrel mare by High Brow Cat and out of That Smarts by Smart Little Lena, owned by Wesley and Kristen Galyean
  9. Matt Budge and Play On Lizzy, a 2005 sorrel mare by Lizzys Gotta Player and out of Stylish Susieque by Docs Stylish Oak, owned by Terry Green

The Ones to Watch

  • Dont Look Twice – won the World Series open prelims at Battle in the Saddle with a 225.5 and has already won three major NCHA events this year.
  • Bet Hesa Cat – placed second in the open prelims with a 223.5, but is the 2011 NCHA leading open horse with earnings of $31,877.
  • CA Las Vegas Lights – the oldest horse to qualify for the open finals, CA Las Vegas Lights placed third in the prelims with a 223 and has already won three Mercuria/NCHA World Series non-pro events. He won the non-pro at this event in 2011 with Caleb Anderson and has to be considered a threat no matter his age.
