Qualify through your affiliate for the AQHA Novice championships.

Qualifying Period: July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013

  • Participants must be members of good standing of the South Dakota Quarter Horse Association/South Dakota Quarter Horse Youth Association prior to any state qualifying points being earned.

The following classes are offered in the Novice amateur and Novice youth at the AQHA Novice Championship shows:

  • Halter (mares & geldings): yearlings, 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds, aged
  • Performance halter (mare & geldings) 
  • Showmanship
  • Horsemanship
  • Hunt seat equitation
  • Western pleasure
  • Hunter under saddle
  • Trail
  • Western riding
  • Reining
  • Barrel racing
  • Pole bending
  • Stake race

Since many of the SDQHA shows do not consistently offer all the classes above as Novice classes, Novice exhibitors may submit a letter of intent to the SDQHA at PO Box 35, Groton, SD 57445, by May 1, 2013, if they would like to have their class points used as qualifying points towards the Novice Championship shows.

  • Novice amateur and Novice youth will earn qualifying points based on SDQHA current state year-end awards point system at any SDQHA-approved show held within the qualifying period. Points are earned on a per horse/exhibitor combination.
  • SDQHA/SDQHYA will invite the top three high-point earning exhibitors in each class offered at the AQHA Novice Championship shows.  These top point earners will be determined from the state points earned during the qualifying period.
  • In the event that an exhibitor declines an invitation, the next highest point earner will be offered an invite to allow three state qualified entries in each class offered at the Novice Championship shows. 
  • In the event of ties in the qualifying points, the tie-breaker system used for the SDQHA year-end awards shall be applied to determine the top qualifiers.
  • The exhibitor enters/attends the Novice Championship shows solely at their own expense; SDQHA/SDQHYA only provides the opportunity to qualify to enter.
  • Any further disputes regarding “slots” will be discussed and decided by SDQHA board of directors.
  • From AQHA:  If there are not three qualifiers in a particular class, the affiliate may move that “slot” to another class and submit four in a particular class; however, no more than six state qualifiers will be allowed in a particular class.
