Candace Pratt’s little gray gelding packs a big punch in the arena. She and Mr Talented Doc clocked a time of 8.681 in the stake race finals August 31 at the 2013 Adequan Select World Championship Show for his first major achievement at an AQHA event and Candace’s first AQHA world championship.

“He’s such a great little horse,” Candace, of Aubrey, Texas, said of “Rope.” “He’s actually my rope horse, but I taught him this event, and he’s so fast and so quick to turn, I realized he was really good in the stake race. Today, he proved it.”

Rope is brand new to stake race. Candace trained him in a short amount of time, but he caught on quickly. Candace took him to just two shows to qualify for the Adequan Select World, and she rarely runs him in the event.

“He’s maybe 14.1, but he’s really fast and a really nice horse,” she said. “He picks up every event really quickly. He’s very talented. He’s so gentle that beginners can ride him.”

In fact, Candace lets her good friend Brett Ranger show Rope on a normal basis in poles, barrels, flags and all the speed events. Candace grabs Rope when she needs a good horse for breakaway, rodeo and heeling.

Candace has always been a fan of the speed events, doing play days in grade school, high school rodeo and then moving on to AQHA and other associations.

Her future goals:

“Hopefully next year I can show him here in the roping,” she said. “I’d like to win a world championship in the other speed events and be the only woman who wins a world championship in the roping.”

Candace is thankful to her friends and her partner, Doreen Rue, a fellow AQHA exhibitor, who accompanied her to Amarillo for the show.

“I love all the camaraderie of all the contestants. I don’t know if it’s because we’re over 50, but it’s very welcoming and you have a really good time. There’s lots of fun throughout the whole show.”
