Team Penning world champions
The open team penning finals was an all-Lesh celebration, as brothers Joel and Jared Lesh and Jared’s wife, Sarah, combined for the AQHA world championship November 9.
Going into the finals at the AQHA World Championship Show, the Lesh team was fourth with a 41.661 time on three head.
The plan for the finals was to pen three.
“I went in the herd first, saw one, ran over there and got him,” Jared said. “He had a trash (cow) with him. Sarah stepped in and turned that trash right off of me. Joel went in for the second cow right on the end. We were looking for the third cow. Sarah rode up and it was right there on the end. It was a gift.”
Joel was riding his own horse, Smartys Miss Pepper, a 2005 black mare by Smart Lil Scoot and out of Real Miss Pepper by Real Doc.
“I’ve been riding her since this spring,” Joel said. “I picked her up to qualify a junior horse for the World Show. She’s an NCHA money-earner.”
Sarah was also on her own mount, DMAC Bunnys Gun.
“I call her Bunny,” Sarah said. “She’s a pretty special mare. She’s a great personality, a great disposition, and she is awesome to ride.”
Jared was on Big Wheel Big Diehl, a 2005 red roan gelding by Sweet Lil Pepto and out of Freckles Molly Doc by Freckles Playboy. He also has National Cutting Horse Association earnings.
“I actually just sold him today to Dennis and Susan Polzin before the finals, so he was tickled to death,” Jared said.
The 33.295 time was good enough for the world championship.
