A Classic Edition and Katie Fox
It was a great day for the Fox family at the 2013 AQHA World Championship Show. Shortly after her dad, Dan Fox, picked up the amateur performance halter stallions world championship with Intersection, 21-year-old Katie Fox led her dad’s 2004 buckskin mare, A Classic Edition, to the amateur performance halter mares world championship.
“This is my first amateur World, so it’s a good way to start,” she told The American Quarter Horse Journal after her win. “It was good competition. The mare that won the (All American Quarter Horse) Congress and the Youth World earlier this year was here.”
Making her first win at the AQHA World Championship Show extra special was her dad in the winners circle with her. Dan sponsored amateur performance halter mares and had the honor of handing the gold trophy to his daughter.
A Classic Edition, or “Cassie,” has been part of the Fox family for three years. This is the horse’s fifth AQHA world championship.
“The first time I showed her, I won the Youth World in 2010,” she recalled. “This is my last time showing her. We’re going to retire her this year.”
She says the highly decorated mare deserves a relaxing retirement after earning more than 1,000 AQHA points in a variety of events.
In fact, most people are surprised at the number of events in which Cassie excels. Frankly, many are surprised when they learn the Fox family rides Cassie every day.
Cassie has points in ranch pleasure, western pleasure, and heading and heeling, in addition to performance halter and halter.
“She does lead changes, and you can ride her bareback,” Katie said smiling. “People ask, ‘Why are you riding that horse?‘ She’s happier when we ride her.”
Cassie is by Kids Classic Style and out of Cooleah by Ima Cool Skip. The Fox family plans to let her carry a baby this coming year.
Katie, an animal science major at Texas A&M University and a member of the rodeo team, confesses that she enjoys barrel racing most of all the Quarter Horse events.
She competes in the amateur barrel racing finals tonight with her 2003 bay mare Ladys Fame. Stay tuned for results!
