2013 Youth World

Performance Halter Mares

Paulina Martz and Onlythebestchocolate celebrate first.

She couldn’t stop crying and her mom says she never does that. But winning a youth world championship tends to do that to you, especially if it’s your first.

Paulina Marie Martz of Blacklick, Ohio, and her 2007 mare, Onlythebestchocolate, won the first finals class of the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Showperformance halter mares.

“I was overwhelmed,” Paulina said. “I don’t think the joy and the ‘Oh, my gosh, I just won the world,’ has set in yet.”

It's your moment; make it last forever! Videos of individual runs and class finals from the Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show are available for purchase at www.aqha.com/mymoment. Bred by Casey Kimberlin and Patsy Casey of Fulsom, Louisiana, Onlythebestchocolate, aka “Hershey,” is by RL Best Of Sudden and out of Chocolate Only by Invitation Only.

Paulina showed Hershey to a second-place finish in youth performance halter mares at the 2012 All American Quarter Horse Congress, and the mare went on to win the 2012 open reserve world championship at the AQHA World Championship Show. The mare is also a multiple world show qualifier in western pleasure and has earned an amateur Superior in the class.

But Paulina didn’t start the year out thinking she’d bring Hershey to the Youth World.

“We have another horse, Eyell Be Outrageous (aka “Rosie,” 2008 reserve world champion junior trail horse, 2009 youth high-point western pleasure, 2010 Justin Rookie of the Year, 30 & under, etc.),” Paulina explained. “We were almost qualified for the pleasure here, but once she got injured, we decided we just couldn’t do it. So that’s when I decided to start riding Hershey in the pleasure, but it was a little late to get qualified for this show.”

She added, “(Hershey is) a very good horse, can be a little ornery sometimes. I show her in the pleasure as well. … In halter, she’s pretty good, she’ll put her ears up for you, and she’ll stay put.

“She doesn’t like white plastic bags, but otherwise, she’s pretty chill. I like her a lot.”

Paulina’s parents Gary and Cathy Martz were in the stands cheering her on along with some family friends; her older sister, Chelsea, is at home watching via the Zoetis Webcast.

Paulina and Hershey are trained by AQHA Professional Horseman Judd and Jennifer Paul of Xenia, Ohio.

“My older sister showed and started riding, and I was like, that’s kind of fun. I came to all the horse shows and I decided that it was kind of a waste not to try it, and I loved it.

“I don’t think I could tell you (what I like best about showing AQHYA.) I like too many parts about it. I like the people you meet, I like the showing, I like the animals, the horses.”
