RACE RECORD

Fourth-fastest Favorite Cartel clocked :21.305 in Race 14. The winner of three races from five starts, Favorite Cartel was third in the Rainbow Futurity (G1), finishing 1 1/2 lengths behind winner Zoomin With Ease and runner-up Runnning Brook Gal.

CONNECTIONS

With Cody Jensen up, the colt cruised to a 2 1/4-length victory, his third in five career outs. Jensen has won the All American Futurity twice -- first with Teller Cartel in 2005, then No Secrets Here in 2006, both of which were trained by Paul Jones.

Favorite Cartel was bred by his trainer Paul Jones and Thompson Racing Inc., Terry Thompson, of Cypress, California, is a neighbor, client and friend of Jones and mentioned interest in an ownership partnership. When Jones purchased Favorite Cartel's dam, the two partnered on her in 2004. The week before the All American Futurity, a half interest in the colt was purchased by Ruidoso Downs majority owner R.D. Hubbard and AQHA President Jim Helzer.

"Favorite Cartel’s really a nice horse," Jones said. "He broke really well from the gates in the trial. We’ve been having some trouble getting him to break like we want, but he broke really good in the trials and he just beat them easy. Cody said he just wrapped up on him and didn’t push him the last part of the race. So if this horse gets a good break, I think he’s super talented."

PEDIGREE

Sire Favorite Trick (TB) was the 1997 Horse of the Year as a 2-year-old, the first since Secretariat in 1972. The Phone Trick stallion has sired 47 Quarter Horse starters. They include champion Prankster CF and stakes winner Tricky Dust. He died in the 2006 barn fire at JEH Stallion Station-New Mexico.

Jones purchased Shenoshercorona off the track with the intention of making her a broodmare. The winning Corona Cartel mare was bred by Henry Brown, and is out of Shenoshespecial. Shenoshespecial is by Special Effort and out of Lil Bit Rusty, making her a half sister to co-world champion Whosleavingwho.

"
I loved (Shenoshercorona)'s pedigree," Jones said. "I wanted a Corona Cartel mare for a broodmare. There wasn’t a lot  Corona Cartel fillies out in the breeding shed, but yet Corona Cartel’s were running very well on the track. And her bottom side was so impressive. The reason we bred to Favorite Trick (TB) is I felt these really quick Corona Cartel fillies would be a good cross to a Thoroughbred." From four foals of racing age, Shenoshercorona has produced stakes winner Shescheckinumout ($90,617) and Grade 1-placed runner Hes Regal ($72,404).
