The America’s Horse Cares program has the support of AQHA’s Ambassador Rugged Lark and his owner, Carol Harris.
A new charitable division of the Foundation, America’s Horse Cares raises money to benefit programs that use horses as a therapeutic tool. The program’s goal is to create an ongoing funding base to support special needs children, individuals and organizations, such as therapeutic riding programs, that benefit from equine experiences. After “Lark’s” death at 23 years old in October 2004 due to complications of colic, Harris of Bo-Bett Farms in Reddick, Florida, decided to create a memorial fund in the stallion’s name that would benefit America’s Horse Cares. Donations made to the Rugged Lark Memorial Fund will go directly to America’s Horse Cares.
“Lark especially loved to be around children and seemed to have an uncanny appreciation and concern for those who were disabled,” Harris said. Lark, a two-time Superhorse known as “America’s Horse,” performed a special bridle-less exhibition during the 1999 Special Olympics in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Harris hopes the America’s Horse Care’s program, with help from the Rugged Lark Memorial Fund, will advance the efforts of therapeutic riding throughout the country.
“Nobody realizes how much therapeutic riding does for disabled people unless they’re involved in it,” she said. “Therapeutic riding has such unlimited possibilities for people. When you put them on a horse, they feel that they’re no longer disabled or limited.”
