ADVERTISING MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Following are the digital specifications for customer- and agency-submitted ads. Failure to adhere to these specifications may result in the ad materials being returned for revisions.

• The magazine uses a Macintosh platform. Acceptable software includes: Quark Xpress (4.0 to 6.0), Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Pagemaker files are acceptable but only when saved as EPS. These can not be changed once accepted.

• The magazine is printed computer-to-plate.

• When submitting discs, pay close attention to the sizes on the rate card when creating your ad. Live area for a full page is 7 1/4” x 10”. Physical page (trim) size is 8 1/4” x 10 7/8”. Bleeds must extend at least one-eighth inch from edge of physical page (8 3/8" x 11 1/4"). These dimensions must be strictly adhered to.

• Place photos in Quark Xpress. Do not embed type or logos into photos or background images.

• All images must be composite CMYK high resolution - 300 DPI. Anything more or less is unacceptable. The magazine’s screen is 150 line.

• Photoshop files and color scans must be in CMYK format. Any other color gamut is unacceptable. Save files as TIFF or EPS. Do not use the DCS format.

• Corel Draw and Freehand files are unacceptable.

• Any artwork created in an illustration program must have all text converted to paths.

• All colors used in the document must be defined as CMYK process colors. Spot colors must be converted. RGB colors are not acceptable.

• Use only Type 1 PostScript fonts and include both the printer font and screen fonts when submitting your ads. Due to time delays, any fonts not submitted will be substituted with a similar font. TrueType fonts are unacceptable.

Acceptable color proofs include: Iris proofs (with Graphic Arts inks), Kodak Approvals, Imation Rainbows, Dupont Waterproofs, Polaroid Dryjets or Epson Stylus 5000 prints. Always send a laser proof along with discs. Always print proofs at 100% of actual size with crop marks.

• Before sending, scan for viruses with an up-to-date virus scanning program. If we detect a virus, your media may be returned to you for virus removal.

• Do not e-mail ad materials. Image files of proper resolution are too large.

• All advertising material will be stored for 2 years after last issue and then destroyed unless written instructions for return are received.
