Waldera and "Cy" compete in nearly every western event from western pleasure to barrels and runs the flag during the morning opening ceremonies. Sunday the Taylor, Wisconsin, resident and his stallion won the Amateur Working Cow Horse class. "I came (to the Regional Experience), as the name implies, to have the experience," he said. "I am having fun and showing horses. I enjoy meeting new people, and everywhere I go I make sure to have fun." Waldera, who was at the barn the day Cy, 9, was born, regularly shows at AQHA, foundation Quarter Horse events and IBHA events. Waldera, who works in maintenance at the Jackson Correctional Institute at Black River Falls, Wisconsin, has about 30 head of foundation-bred horses. "Cy is great in all-around," Waldera said. "He's my friend and my partner, and he's very willing. I've been blessed with a great horse." | Christa Madaus of Northfield, Minnesota, and 5-year-old Kits Fired Up competed in barrel racing. Madaus, a union carpenter, bred and raised "Derby," who will be competing at the AQHA World Championship Show in Junior Barrels. Madaus has owned her 20-year-old dam, Ms Kitty Hawk, since the mare was 9, and she learned to barrel race on her. She now owns three foals, including Derby, out of the mare. They came to the Regional Experience for the first time. "I just wanted to have a nice place to run my horse," Madaus said.
