Rita Crundwell of Dixon, Illinois, captured the Select world championship in 3-year-old stallions with her homebred Obvious N Telusive over a stellar line-up of seasoned World show campaigners. The Journal spoke with the accomplished breeder and show-woman just after Rita’s last class of the day. On this first day of Select halter competition, Rita also took reserve in 3-year-old mares with Shes Coolest, a daughter of her multiple world champion mare, She Scores, and third in 2-year-old geldings with Sacreds Touch Too.
Q. Please tell us about this horse.
Rita: Well, I raised him. And he’s out of a (multiple) world champion mare, and I won the (All American Quarter Horse) Congress with him last year. But this is my first world championship with him.
Q. What makes him stand out in the pen?
Rita: He’s real correct; he’s like hand made, a very pretty horse. He’s not the tallest horse, but he’s very correct.
Q. Is there a trick to getting him shown?
Rita: No, really, he’s easy. In fact he’s so laid-back it’s hard to get his ears up. I had a little piece of hay today that I used, and that worked for like half the class.
Rita Crundwell showed her homebred Obvious N Telusive to the 2008 Select world championship in 3-year-old stallions.
Q. What are your plans with him?
Rita: We’ll show him again at the (All American Quarter Horse) Congress and the (AQHA World Championship Show) in Oklahoma City – Buddy (Laney) will show him. And we’ll probably stand him next year.
Q. Is there anyone you’d like to thank?
Rita: Oh, as always, my crew, the Laneys, Jim (McKillips) and the kids at the barn who do all the work.
Fun Fact: Rita bought Obvious N Telusive's dam, Sheza Telusive Kid, in 2003. The mare was a youth world champion halter mare as a 2- and 3-year-old.
