Deborah Coughlin led Esharp out of the arena, trophy in hand, just to hand over her horse and winnings and go back in with a mare. After Deborah had time to freshen up a bit, she took a moment to talk to the Journal about her horse and his success.
Q: Tell us about Esharp. Deborah: Esharp’s a wonderful gelding. I showed him as a 2-year-old and enjoyed showing because he’s got the right personality and he’s just really a neat horse to show. He’s won the world now four times and he certainly earned it.
Q: What’s he like to show? Deborah: He likes to look good. I have to step away and let the judges appreciate the beauty of the horse. He’s just a wonderful guy, and he stands right up there and looks great.
Deborah L. Coughlin and Esharp of London, Ohio.
Q: What were you thinking as the announcersgot closer to calling your name? Deborah: It was just the greatest thrill. It was so much fun. I certainly didn’t expect it. You never really think you can. You just know you’re there. You see how it works, and it did.
Q: What do you call him at home? Deborah: Esharp. It’s a nice short name.
Q: Any quirks this horse has? Deborah: He likes to chew on his shank. It gives him something to do. He gets a little bored standing out there looking pretty. He’s got to do something to keep me occupied, too, I guess.
Q: You’ve had so much success. What’s next for you? Deborah: The All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio.
Q: Will we see you back here next year to defend your title? Deborah: I hope so.
