With a final time of 2.603, Kent Youngblood and Docs Dual Peppy won the 2008 Select breakaway roping world championship. Kent qualified both “Kid,” a 2000 sorrel gelding, and YB The Sheriff a 2002 bay stallion – he finished ninth on him. The Journal was able to catch up with Kent between events to hear more about his winning team.
Q. Is this your first world championship?
Kent: No, last year I won this on the same horse. (Kid) is a lot more seasoned this year. Last year, he only started roping in April and won Select in August. He was a little green last year, and it’s a little bit the opposite now. He’s so smart he almost took it out of my hand today. He was plenty tight today. And he dragged me over the front pretty good. He’s smart enough to know what we’re doing now on a regular basis. He’s a quick learner – a little too quick possibly.
Q. What is Kid’s personality like?
Kent: He’s just the kind of horse that never aggravates anybody for any reason. He’s just the nicest horse to be around. They’re all for sale at my house, but I’d hate to see this horse go – you know. He’s one of the few that I know better than to fall in love with because I know they make more every day and there’ll be more coming through my pen all the time, but this is one of those horses that is just really nice to be around. He’s good in both ends of the team roping. He’s the best personality I’ve ever had in a horse. Like I said, I know better than to fall in love with ‘em, but I really kinda like this horse.
Kent Youngblood receives his second breakaway gold trophy aboard Docs Dual Peppy.
Q. Do you have future plans for him?
Kent: He’ll probably come back (to Select) next year, unless he does sell. I’d like to keep him for my kids to ride, but like I say, they make more all the time and he may be gone someday. They’re all for sale at my house.
If not, I’ll try and qualify him again next year. Matter of fact, he might already be qualified. I went to some July shows, and I think he’s already qualified. So he’ll be back if I still own him.
Q. Is there anything else you’d like to share about Docs Dual Peppy?
Kent: He’s just a nice horse to be around. He was a reiner reject, and I just didn’t make it in the reining, but since then I’ve shown him in the working cow horse. We’re up Friday in the working cow horse and today yet in heeling. This week is just starting. He’s qualified for the all-around, but probably doesn’t have a chance in it, but he might. He’s already won this and I have a good chance in the heeling and cow horse. Maybe, who knows?
Q. How has your experience been at Select?
Kent: Oh, real good. Somebody said this is they\ only place anybody’s old enough to know who I am. You know – we’re all old, or we wouldn’t be here! I see a lot of guys I used to know years ago and meet a few people I didn’t know. It’s a fun experience.
Fun Fact: Kent and Kid are qualified for the 2008 Sooner Trailer Bayer Select All-Around Amateur award.
